For a long time I wanted to have my own tufting and punch needle frame. Every time I looked up prices online, I ended up with the same disappointment: they were ridiculously expensive. And of course, no matter how nice they looked, at the end of the day, theyâre still just four wooden slats joined with nails⊠so one day I thought to myself: âWhat if I make it myself?â đ€
It wasnât going to be easy because I donât have many tools, but the idea of making it with my own hands intrigued me. The first step was to go to the sawmill. I explained that I needed wood cut into slats with exact measurements, and also planed. Itâs not that I didnât want to do it myself, but realistically, I donât own an electric planer, and sanding all that wood by hand would have been a nightmare. The person in charge told me I would have to wait a few days until everything was ready.
The day they called me to pick it up, I went straight to the carpenter with my idea. I made a hand-drawn sketch to better explain what I had in mind. I knew that just telling him what I wanted wouldnât be enough because itâs not a common request, but luckily, with my inexperienced drawing, I managed to explain exactly what I wanted, and it was enough for him to understand my idea đ

No iba a ser fĂĄcil porque no tengo muchas herramientas, pero la idea de hacerlo con mis propias manos me intrigaba. El primer paso fue ir al aserradero. Les expliquĂ© que necesitaba madera cortada en listones con medidas exactas, y tambiĂ©n que la dejaran cepillada. No es que no quisiera hacerlo yo, pero siendo realista, no tengo cepillo elĂ©ctrico y lijar todo eso a mano hubiera sido terrible. El encargado me dijo que tenĂa que esperar unos dĂas hasta que tuvieran todo listo.
El dĂa que em avisaron para que las fuera buscar, me fui directamente al carpintero con la idea que tenĂa. Hice un dibujo a mano para poder explicarle bien la idea. SabĂa que con solo comentarle lo que querĂa no lo iba a entender porque no es un pedido comĂșn, pero por suerte con mi dibujo inexperto fui capaz de explicarle exactamente lo que querĂa y sirviĂł para que entendiera mi ideađ
I asked him to cut and join the wood according to my little sketch, and to turn two round sticks (it was the only part that required that kind of work). I left everything in his hands and went on my way. Five days later, I returned to the workshop to see how it was going, and to my surprise, it was already finished! So I was able to take it home that very same day. Transporting it was a whole process, I had to ask my dad for help with his car because otherwise it would have been impossible. Itâs not very heavy, but still, carrying it for several blocks on foot would have been exhausting đ„”

[ESP] Le pedĂ que cortara y uniera las maderas segĂșn mi dibujito, y que torneara dos palitos redondos (era lo Ășnico que requerĂa ese tipo de trabajo). DejĂ© todo en sus manos y me fui. Cinco dĂas despuĂ©s, volvĂ al taller para ver cĂłmo iba, y para mi sorpresa ya lo tenĂa listo! AsĂ que me lo pude llevar ese mismo dĂa. Para trasladarlo fue todo un proceso, tuve que pedirle ayuda a mi papĂĄ con su auto porque sino era imposible. No es muy pesado, pero igual para llevarlo caminando tantas cuadras sĂ đ„”
After that came, for me, the worst part: hammering in each nail one by one. I thought it would be a one-afternoon job, but no! The wood turned out to be much harder than I expected. There were spots where, no matter how hard I hit the hammer with all my strength, the nail wouldnât go in even a millimeter đ°.
A carpenter friend explained to me that this was because the wood had âknotsâ in certain areas (darker and denser spots that are almost impenetrable), and I had no idea about that. I ended up going to the hardware store three times because I always miscalculated the number of nails Iâd need. Between the wrist pain from all the hammering and the fact that I couldnât work during certain hours because of the neighbors, it took me almost a whole week to finish that part â.

[ESP] DespuĂ©s de esto, vino para mĂ la peor parte, clavar uno por uno cada clavo. PensĂ© que serĂa un trabajo de una tarde, pero no! La madera resultĂł ser mĂĄs dura de lo que imaginaba. HabĂa partes en las que por mĂĄs que golpeara el martillo con todas mis fuerzas, el clavo no entraba ni un milĂmetrođ°.
Un amigo carpintero me explicĂł que eso era porque la madera en ciertas partes tenĂa ''nudos'' (zonas mĂĄs oscuras y densas que son casi impenetrables), y yo no tenĂa ni idea. TerminĂ© yendo tres veces a la ferreterĂa porque siempre calculaba mal la cantidad de clavos. Entre el dolor de muñeca por el golpeteo con el martillo, y el hecho de que no podĂa hacerlo en ciertos horarios por los vecinos, tardĂ© casi una semana entera en completar esa parteâ.
But well, once it was finished, I was happy with the result đ. Itâs far from perfect, but itâs functional and comfortable, and thatâs what matters to me.
