August 8th is International Cat Day!
Yes, today is one of the "special days" in the annual cat calendar of events!
International Cat Day was created by the International Fund for Animal welfare in 2002, but has been under the stewardship of the International Cat Care organization since 2020.
As an aside, today is also National Cat Day in Canada!
Of course, in this household we pretty much celebrate cats on all days, but it's good to know that there are special days for cats!
So what do we do with this day?
Well, we celebrate all things cat, of course!
As a day, we invite people to take a few extra moments to spend with their feline friends... whether extra playtime, treats or just "together time."
Our planet is home to more than a half billion cats, both those with Hooman caretakers, as well as cats who fend for themselves as street cats.
If you share pictures of your favorite Feline friends on social media, you are encouraged to use the tag #celebratecats to let the world know you're participating!

You're also encouraged to make a donation to an animal welfare organization that works with the well-being of cats, or perhaps to your local no-kill animal shelter!
And, of course, one of the best way to help cats is simply to give a loving home to a stray or shelter cat!
Cats have lived in close proximity to Hoomans for a very long time. Some researchers estimate that cats first became "domesticated" as much as 10,000 years ago, when settlements and agriculture first became "a thing."
Undoubtedly, the first "pet" cats were actually farm workers, helping to keep vermin out of crop stores, in exchange for a measure of food and shelter... but, in time, much deeper bonds and connections formed between our two species.
