I love the vibrant colors of the oranges and the magnificent juice they contain. A couple of weeks ago I made a video about my yearly practice of making orange jam. Today I want to tell you about making orange juice on a daily base all winter long.
This morning I wandered over to the orange trees, climbed up, and gathered a bagful of oranges. By now all the low hanging fruit has been picked though there are still bags and baskets of oranges to collect from the higher up branches.
But, maybe saying I make juice each day is a bit misleading. I actually don't juice the oranges but rather cut out the seeds and remove the peel before dumping the fruit into the blender. This way my partner and I benefit from the fresh juice as well as the fiber from the pulp which is essential to our plan for health.
Besides the fruit from four or five oranges I also like to add a tablespoon full of honey, a tiny spoonful of pollen and ...
A secret ingredient: two capsules of electrolytes - one for each person. Both my guy and I have very active lives including lots of physical labor and a fair bit of sweating. About a year ago I started making juices with electrolytes, which are minerals essential to humans. We loose electrolytes by sweating and need to replace them through our diets. We can replace them even faster by adding electrolyte formulas to homemade energy drinks.
Here is a list of ingredients:
- 5 oranges
- 1 tablespoon of honey
- 1 teaspoon of pollen
- 2 capsules of electrolytes
To all of this I added about a liter of water from our local environment. We are super lucky that water flows in this land and take some extra care to filter and treat the water with ozone before consuming. In total this made about 1.5 liters of orange juice.
We took a mid-morning break to drink our super hydrating drink in the sunshine. The salty, sweet, and tart drink fills me with energy and makes me feel hydrated immediately. So, it is back to work for us!
