Road Trip
I will be on a Road Trip starting tomorrow. I don't know if Road Trips are really an American thing. I think it could be, especially a car based one. I haven't done too much research on the subject, but know with the advent of Interstate Highway systems and cheap gasoline and automobile, road trips took off.
New highways in the early 20th century helped propel automobile travel in the United States, primarily cross-country. Commissioned in 1926 and completely paved near the end of the 1930s, U.S. Route 66 is a living icon of early modern road-tripping.
I personally love to drive, and I have learned to do road trips after I have moved to the United States. I remember my first road trip almost immediately after buying my first car: from Norman, Ok to Moab, UT. I wanted to see the Arches National Park. I did, and did many more things, but that is a story for later.

I just saw this video by Mathew McConaughey. It did hit a chord with me. He says that a road trip take one far enough away from their past and gets one in present. Gets one so involved in present, that they don't even worry about the future. Then all of sudden your past and future makes more sense. I think I like that. I feel the same way. I also feel it is very educational. I will be taking this trip with my older daughter, and her only, as that is the way she requested. She is 12, and I feel, the social butterfly that she is, this is probably the last time she is asking for a drip with her dad and dad only.
My wife and my yourger daughter will be flying to Calgary, Canada, and we will pick them up on our way to Jasper National Park in Alberta Canada. That's the plan. My daughter will be the navigator, so I expect to get lost a lot:) I have done a similar drive from Houston to Montana several times before during my school days as a geologist, but this will be the first with my daughter. I am looking forward to it. Its a 2500 miles drive one way, and I will do it back on my own (she loves me, but she doesn't love me that much!). The young lady is keeping her options open, and she doesn't want too much of the same stuff. She won't be riding back with her old man, and take the flight back instead. That is a good thing for me too, as that will help me enjoy some quality alone time, which is rare for me these days.
We said to each other, that is our Father's Day Gift to each other.
