If the Israelites knew that they would have to spend forty (40) years in the wilderness before getting to the promised land, they would certainly prefer to remain in Egypt, and if Moses knew that he wouldn't enter the promised land after beholding it, he would have rejected embarking on the journey.
Man in nature detests any form of hardship. He does everything possible to avoid it or have it reduced, however, the fall of our first parents placed us in a pattern where success is only born through hard work.
Again, a man in nature desires pleasure. The Israelites accepted to move from Egypt to the promised land because they were told that it is a land filled with milk and honey. This perceived pleasure became their hope. They didn't care about what awaited them on the road. We can see how they complained to Moses when what they were witnessing became different from what they hoped for.
Since man is affected differently by both pleasure and hardship, the best way to deal with life then is by enduring hardship because of the forthcoming pleasure. This has proven to be feasible and desirable. Many of the successful people we know today applied this strategy and it got them to where they are today. There is and there will always be joy in the morning. The question then is, are we ready to stay awake and work all night?.
Whenever it appears that the burden of life is much on us, let us not be discouraged. Let us be encouraged by the fact that the good Lord won't allow anything greater than us to come to us. May the Lord give us the grace to endure the hardships that come our part in our quest for a better living.
