One of the most difficult things in life is admitting ones fault irrespective of the level of punishment or embarrassment that comes after it.
Growing up I used to shy away from lots if house chores and most times I tend to pretend as if I was sick.
Dish washing was never my friend in any way, if I had my way I could even pay someone to help me wash my hands as soon as I'm done eating. I so hated anything that had to do with washing.
This became a serious matter that it got into the ears of my Father. When He heard the complaints, laughed and advised them to let me be saying "time would tell".
At first when my kid sis (my paddy) rushed into the room and whispered into my ears saying "they want to report you to dad", my heart skipped and I felt like I should just vanish into the thin air.
I waited for several hours expecting the usual call from Him but nothing was forth coming, since I was hungry as usual I dived into the kitchen to request for my lunch.
Unlike the other days my sis served me and kept on asking "would this quantity be enough for you?", as a glutton I shouted "add more make it 2 plates". She smiled and kept on dishing.
Few minutes later I cleared the plate and quickly dumped it in the kitchen. Sisi asked "Oga won't you wash your plates?", I replied as usual "men has no place for them in the kitchen". She laughed and watched me bounce as I walked away.
As a custom in the house after eating we are expected to say a very big thanks to all the elderly ones in the house, so I went straight to my parents room, knocked to mark my "thank you attendance".
Knock Knock
Dad - yes come in
Me - No need Dad, I just wanted to say thanks for the food.
Dad - Hope you ate to your satisfaction
Me - Yes daddy
Dad - Did you wash your plates?
Me - No, I would wash it I just came around to tell you I am done eating. On my way back I would wash it.
Dad - No need, "Men don't wash dishes" I thought that is your favorite quote.
Me - Ok thanks Dad I would leave it there for Sisi to wash it
Dad - That's awesome, you can go to your room
Me - Ok sir😂
I was so glad and felt like a boss, you need to see the way I walked back to my room so full of boldness and pride. I barely lay 5 minutes on my bed when I heard my name Ony, I jumped up immediately.
As soon as I opened the door the next thing I heard from Dad was "since men don't wash dishes its time to do what real men does pickup the cutlass and follow me".
Mehh I felt like I could melt, Cutlass? weeding? no this cant be happening.
You should know the rest of the story. I so cleared the grass in the compound and that of my neighbors too because the family had no male child.
Ever since then I have been begging them to allow me was even if its my spoon after eating, but they reply me wit "Men don't wash dishes".
Lesson learnt
Never try to shy away from responsibilities, the next phase might be worse that that which you ran away from.
