Human or animal sacrifice was a practice evident in the primitive era of man. It is believed to be a requirement that is needed to appearance the gods or ask them for anything.
These practices involve killing of animals or human beings. Mostly, animals were needed to appease, depending on the gravity of the offence committed.
In today's society, these practices have been considered to be archaic and irrelevant to human situations.
Science liberated us from such belief and proffer solutions to our problems and also answer our questions.
Unfortunately, some of those practices find there way into the modern era. While this might look surprising to some, i doubt it is to many Nigerians.
I know some of these practices still take place in villages which people over there do not seem to question much.
But when such is being practiced in state like Lagos, Nigeria, you wonder how primitive we are to still have such in a so called mega city.
Till today, communities like Ikorodu and Egbeda still carry sacrifices to appease the gods or to celebrate festive days.
If these sacrifices are carried without any harm, we might excuse them as a practice of African Traditional Religion but this is not so.
There is always warning before this activities and these warnings are threats to human lives.
They often warn us not to move from certain time to another time which they would need no eyes to behold the sacrifice .
Women are often at the receiving end. There is a major festival they do which they carry a sacrifice that women must not see. They call it 'ORO'.
A woman who sees it dies because according to them, it is a taboo or what some call forbidden.
It goes to say that with our knowledge of Christianity and Islam, people still engage in human sacrifice.
Perhaps, you are wondering if we have government or not? We sure do but our laws are always inferior to these activities.
The government cannot claim they are unaware of these activities because that of Ikorodu, is always popular that we hear about it almost everywhere.
Perhaps there is a need to enact laws to stop such activities that take away lives on the premise of carrying out sacrifice to appease gods.
Human lives is sacred and should be treated as such. In 21st century, we should be free of any barbaric ideas that undermine the freedom of human beings.
