North of Adelaide, lies Gawler. North (and West-ish) lies Roseworthy. North East-ish of there lies Lyndoch. Both places have "decomissioned" (abandoned) train lines, which are in various states of disrepair.
Many people on the Adelaide reddit extoll the need to re-open this rail corridor, but having had a wander down in that direction today, for the sake of exploration, there's a lot of cost sure to be involved in such a rejuvenation.
Firstly, there's the fact that I'm not a train expert. I won't even come close to one. Secondly, there doesn't appear to be any meaningful power infrastructure alongside the line, minus some telegraph poles that appear to be devoid of wiring.
Thirdly, the sleepers on the track are all timber, some rotten, some clearly termite damaged, and others that were burnt by various fires over the years.
Thirdly, some of the tracks have grasses, weeds, and even shrubs growing out of them. Nature has truly taken over.
Fourthly?! Fences. There'd be a need for fencing. And finally, there's only one track. There's no duplication of the line, so it would likely need another line to be installed alongside, and with that, probably additional grading of the land in parts, which means... more cost.
It would be an immense task of engineering, but with many more development approvals going on in this area, it might be a requirement for the future of the sprawling North of Adelaide.
Any way, here are some photographs I took, while scouting for another photographic project. I'll return to this place some day.
These train tracks have not been in use for many years. No one was in danger by exploring this section of land.
