released a Prompt in the World Building Community, in which he asks us to discuss food taboos in our setting.
Tell me about food taboos in your setting. Are they for cultural, historical, health or religious reasons ? Are the people pure vegetarians ? Are some meats not permitted ? Are some preparation methods taboo, or only used on specific occasions ? Is cannibalism the ultimate taboo, or acceptable if you're eating foreigners, or perhaps a part of certain rituals ? Or maybe your world is so apocalyptic that any food is fair game ?
Doshans
There are regions of Dosha, where the people of the population are vegetarian. After some people known as Spotters discovered the ability to jump perspective and remote view from animal's eyes.
These particular Doshans undergo training to hone their ability, starting with small creatures, and some of the Elders, are able to see through the eyes of much larger creatures, some even say that they're able to remote view through the eyes of other Doshans and other intelligent life. After they learned the ability this particular tribe refused to eat any and all meat, bar insects which they weren't able to see through the eyes of.
While looking through the eyes of creatures, the viewer has no control over the animal and cannot make any suggestions, but they can be utilised as planet-wide security cameras. Barely anything happens on Dosha without this group knowing about it, however, it did give rise to another tribe that keep all animals out of their townships and villages. They also conduct all meetings with as few people as they can.
Gnosians
The Gnosians are huge hulking alien creatures, who are from the same solar system as the Triskens. They are reptilian and look more like bipedal monsters than they do people.
They are warlike, and on average have short fuses. Gnosians are masters of intimidation and know exactly how to use their size and psychopathic tendencies to their advantage. Their society only truly respects strength among all else, but there are those amongst them who pursue alternative lifestyles, however, Gnosians scientists, poets, and philosophers are usually hard to take seriously by the other races of Free Space and they tend to become alienated or exiled by other Gnosians.
They can eat almost anything, and most are strictly carnivorous. One thing they do to intimidate other races, especially those that the Gnosians are waring with - is to eat the slain, and sometimes they eat their enemies while they're alive and do so in full view of anyone they may have captured in battle, not that it's very common that would happen.
Scoosha
The main city of Tar-Dina is one of the most populated places in the world, bar some off settlements in the surrounding deserts of the city.
Beyond The Great Wastes are The Wider Wastes, home to multiple people who the grander Scooshan government has chosen to ignore and leave to their own devices.
This world used to be home to multiple intelligent species who shared the planet. The Scooshans and this long-forgotten race had a long-lasting war, in which the Scooshans won. They kept control of the entire world and exiled the other race beyond the great deserts of the main continent.
From here, they were unable to escape, as the wasteland was too vast for them to travel on foot, especially since their society was blasted back to the dark ages.
Over the years they have rebuilt themselves, but are still far behind the advancements throughout the rest of the galaxy. While there were concerns about it being inhumane to leave them in isolation, these debates are currently ongoing, and it is considered inhumane to contact them now since they may not be able to comprehend technology.
This Region
Home to many different townships, villages, clans, and tribes with their own beliefs and varying degrees of advancement, there is one who sticks out.
They have a tradition of testing the strength of their warriors by sending them out to hunt down and kill a Guro, which are large creatures who nest in this region. They treat the skull and wear them as helmets, to distinguish themselves against the lesser classes of their society, and with the helmet donned they consume the meat of the creature and see it as a way of gaining its strength. Because of this tradition, they are some of the strongest warriors amongst their people and because only warriors can breed, strength as a trait is passed on, but to them, they believe it's the Guro meat that helps them.
This region is also home to a tribe of cannibals who live in the shell of a ruined city, living amongst the ruins of a society they have never known or understood. Most people will kill the cannibals on sight, but for safety, the old ruins are avoided at all costs, which has recently made the cannibals become bolder in search of food.
