I must say I was quite surprised to see that there is actually quite a roster of headlining women wrestlers in the WWE nowadays. Granted that the last time I watched was in the 90s - 2000s, with such a big time gap, any changes at all will seem like a big shock to me.
I do remember that almost all the females on the WWF/WWE in the past were mainly managers or side characters in the grand scheme of things. I always felt that they were there mainly to add sex appeal into the wrestling scene. The mix of all the alpha males battling it out with a female occasionally making an appearance would definitely draw lots of eyeballs her way.
Even if the female wrestlers had some fights in the ring, they were mostly sideshows and dull affairs. I know me and my friends usually took that like a commercial break aka time to go to the toilet or get some snacks.
I might have seen glimpses of when women wrestling starting going mainstream with the "Divas" in the 2000s but that was also the time I slowly stopped watching WWE entirely.
I don't really know any of the female wrestlers now, but it is nice to know that the industry has moved with the times to be more inclusive. Female fights can be incredibly athletic. I do believe some of it can be attributed to the Marvel Black Widow effect too. I'll definitely not take the female segment as a commercial break should I watch a match again.
But that said, my question still stands. How has women wrestling changed? Was it gradual? Or did some switch get flicked on somewhere one day for whatever reasons?
