This recent video from Shane Douglas' YouTube channel has him discussing the need for comic relief and humor during ECW's original run. Due to the intense nature of weapons, balcony dives, blood, cursing on the microphone and more - Shane believes that some ECW alumni were overlooked in their ability to add humor at perfect times in order to balance out the crowd emotions.
He specifically discusses The Blue Meanie, Stevie Richards and other bWo (Blue World Order) members - using an example from the Halloween 1997 show in Stamford, Connecticut. This took place at the hockey rink only a short distance from the then-WWF headquarters.
So much of ECW's humor has been overlooked in recent years by pro wrestling fans, especially those who weren't alive at the time ECW ran shows. Some examples include:
- Joey Styles' consistent one-liners and humor in his announcing, both in the ring as well as the television commentary
- Joel Gertner's humor, week in and week out
- The use of non-Italians in the Full Blooded Italians stable such JT Smith singing Sinatra songs, Tommy Rich & Tracy Smothers being "Southern" Italians, and more
- The various acts with Stevie Richards and The Blue Meanie prior to the formation of the bWo, along with the bWo TV vignettes spoofing the nWo in WCW at the time
- The fans' chants at various wrestlers, including valets like Francine which had the crowd laughing at the end
- The Public Enemy's promos hyping their tag team championship matches
- The various seasonal TV vignettes such as the bWo superkicking Santa Claus at Rockefeller Center in New York City
- Many others
