🇪🇸 ~ Normalmente las convenciones manganime terminan a una hora temprana, es extraño encontrar eventos que se extiendan después de las 7 u 8 pm, especialmente los que tienen clasificación de aptos para toda la familia.

Curiosidades de estos encuentros para fans y artistas es que la salida o la última hora del cronograma siempre tiene esta atmosfera curiosa entre el relax y la urgencia; pasaste el día recorriendo el evento, disfrutando del cronograma, los concursos, las largas charlas con amigos que veías solo 1 o 2 veces al año, ocurrían muchas cosas en una sola tarde y el tiempo vuela.

Cuando se hacía de noche, por allá a inicios del año 2010 (estas fotos son de 2011) era difícil conseguir taxi para regresar a casa después de las 6 pm; ¿por qué?, las líneas de taxi no daban abasto con toda la cantidad de personas que llamaba a las operadoras por taxi para regresar a casa del trabajo (no existían sistemas automatizados como ahora), también, Maracaibo era una ciudad en ese entonces algo peligrosa, con muchos casos de asaltos, secuestros y robos violentos.

Entonces era normal que quienes trabajaban como taxistas por seguridad propia buscaran guardarse temprano en casa con sus familias, también recuerdo que tenían mucho cuidado de a quien subían a sus taxis, y eso para un montón de "chamos" que salían "disfrazados" de una convención en un tiempo donde todavía se creía que jugar "YuGiOh!" era culto al diablo, podía ser un problema.

Afortunadamente con el tiempo aprendí a gestionar bien el tema del transporte, a saber qué decirle a las operadoras para que supieran que éramos personas seguras y así tener al menos, un feliz retorno a casa sin incidentes.

Lo que digo aquí se que puede sonar redundante si lo lees desde el contexto de 2026, ahora tenemos Ridery, Yummy, LaWaWa, y otros servicios de traslado seguros, asequibles, y hasta programables a casi cualquier hora del día:

🇺🇸 ~ Manganime conventions usually end early; it’s rare to find events that go past 7 or 8 p.m., especially those rated family-friendly.

One interesting thing about these gatherings for fans and artists is that the end of the event or the final hour of the schedule always has this peculiar atmosphere, somewhere between relaxation and urgency; you spent the day wandering around the event, enjoying the schedule, the contests, the long chats with friends you only saw once or twice a year—so much happened in a single afternoon, and time just flies by.

When night fell, back in early 2010 (these photos are from 2011), it was hard to get a taxi to go home after 6 p.m.; Why? The taxi dispatch lines couldn’t keep up with the sheer number of people calling operators for a ride home from work (there were no automated systems like there are now). Also, Maracaibo was a somewhat dangerous city back then, with many cases of muggings, kidnappings, and violent robberies.

So it was normal for taxi drivers, for their own safety, to try to get home early to be with their families. I also remember that they were very careful about who they let into their taxis, and for a bunch of “kids” who were out “dressed up” from a convention at a time when people still believed that playing “Yu-Gi-Oh!” was devil worship, that could be a problem.

Fortunately, over time I learned to handle the transportation issue well—knowing what to tell the dispatchers so they’d know we were safe people and thus ensure, at the very least, a safe return home without incident.

I know what I’m saying here might sound redundant if you’re reading this from the perspective of 2026—now we have Ridery, Yummy, LaWaWa, and other safe, affordable ride-sharing services that can even be booked at almost any time of day:

But to help you understand how unusual this photo is today, I’ll explain the context from 15 years ago—how strange it was to be out here at the end of a night convention, feeling safe, even if you had your own car.

Este es uno de los recuerdos bonitos que guardo cuando todavía un grupo de amigos cosplayers de diferentes estados del país coincidían en mi casa, a todos los recuerdo con mucho cariño. Hoy también pienso en cómo se desarrollo el camino de cada uno a medida que avanzamos en la vida, digo la adultez.

De esta foto tengo conocimiento de al menos 4 que actualmente residen en el extranjero, emigraron, y muy posiblemente nunca volvamos a vernos en persona, pero los recuerdo y tengo presente con mucho cariño; y también de todos en esta fotografía, creo que solo 3 continuamos haciendo Cosplays cuando el tiempo y las circunstancias lo han permitido.

Es lindo recordar, y seguir comparando un TBT a la vez cuánto han cambiado y evolucionado las cosas.

This is one of the fond memories I cherish from back when a group of cosplay friends from different states across the country would gather at my house; I remember them all with great affection. Today, I also think about how each of our paths has unfolded as we’ve moved forward in life—that is, into adulthood.

From this photo, I know of at least four people who currently live abroad—they emigrated—and we may very well never see each other in person again, but I remember them and hold them in my heart with great affection; and of everyone in this photo, I think only three of us continue to do cosplay when time and circumstances allow.

It’s nice to look back and, with each Throwback Thursday, see how much things have changed and evolved.
