Getting Started
Don't let anyone tell you that starting on HIVE Is easy. It most certainly is not. There is a learning curve on trying to write things in HTML. Trying to figure out how to add images. How to reference images properly. How to properly engage in communities. How to move tokens around and even just how to claim tokens.
As a new user you will be doing all that work and then no-one reads your article. Well, you might get lucky and get eyes on one post.
or maybe I'm just super boring
It doesn't matter whether I'm boring or not though. Anyone who takes all the time and effort to make a good post only to have it totally ignored is going to feel really discouraged really quickly.
That's why I'm really happy to have the HELIOS token. I know that the HIVE community is pretty against the BURN 2 EARN idea and there are very good reasons why it shouldn't be used. If it is purely to vote farming and provides little useful content then I'm pretty sure I would be all for banning it as well.
But how about as a retention tool for hardworking new members?
How about as a curation tool for communities that don't have a wealthy curation account?
A community sponsored growth
The Great Little Dragons community isn't really open for business yet but if it was the curation account at its best had 10,000 HP staked to give its upvote a voice. Even with the low price of HIVE at this moment that requires a considerable monetary outlay. It also only gives a very small upvote.
Honesty, who is excited to get an upvote worth 5 cents?
HELIOS has worked as an upvote concentrator for the community and by adding a "Loan" component it concentrates votes even more.
Here is the math.
I know. No-One likes the math but still.
Usual Hive Curation
Assuming the curator account has 10,000 HP. That means 10 upvotes daily for a value of 0.04 cents.
$0.40/day ... half to the curator and half to the author $0.20 spit among 10 people. (ugh)
But what if you just wanted to actually reward the best post of the day? With the typical Hive model that just isn't possible. HELIOS does make it possible though.
HELIOS based curation
Assuming the curator has 10,000 HP and delegates to
Every day HELIOS tokens are distributed to the delegators. Right now that would be about:
24 HELIOS daily
If there are no good posts to upvote in the community? No problem. The HELIOS is there when a good post arrives. When there is a good post? Tag the post and burn the HELIOS to give it the attention it deserves.
24 HELIOS burnt = $1.00 upvote (half going to the author).
Instead of giving 10 people $0.02 every day HELIOS allows the community to give one good post 25 times that amount but only once a day. It also allows the community to "save up" for a week and reward 3 top posts with a "maximum upvote" which would be a $2.00 reward (half to author).
I'm not sure if HELIOS was meant for that
But honestly? It is a super useful tool to allow a community to reward its best posts.
Community sponsored growth
One thing about using HELIOS tokens to upvote is that it bypasses the usual framework that curators and authors share in the reward.
Burning HELIOS to support members of a community gives the members value but doesn't enrich the community (other than by encouraging people to post). For long term growth of the community that is an issue. Which is why you will notice in my daily update on finances you will see that I've added a "GLD owed" column.
The community "Loaned" me value in the form of HELIOS burns. I support the community by purchasing the community GLD token. I don't "pay back" the help that I get. I get to keep the GLD tokens and I get to keep out the weekly payouts that it gives out. However, by purchasing the GLD token I'm giving the community of my HIVE to invest to help things grow in the future.
After the first three weeks?
- The community has invested 630 GLD of value into this account.
- I've purchased 481 GLD to show ongoing support. Yes, I still "owe" but in time I will balance the scales.
How do I balance the scales?
I'm growing my HP day by day by day. I'm delegating it so I can get my own income in HELIOS. I can save that up to be able to upvote other people's content. Or I can sell that HELIOS on the hive-engine to get more HIVE to either pay back the community...or get HIVE power to grow my personal strength.
I've spent a lot of time writing
I'm just writing articles that I find interesting for the day. That's all. The community gives me a place to post them, gives me upvotes to support my writing, and I support the community by buying GLD.
It is a very slow going process but if I can do 100 HP in 3 weeks? Then that could be almost 1700 HP in a year. That is significant growth!
I don't know what the future holds
I don't know if I have enough to talk about for a post every day. I don't know where HIVE will be in a year. I do know that with the Great Little Dragons community support I have an actual chance to make something tangible on HIVE and not just be an account that fades away like so many others.
I look forward to documenting my milestone and providing a blueprint for other new members who want a path to forge their own HIVE account.
Thanks for reading.
