Where do you delegate?
is a new Actifitter and Hivian. She is working hard at exercising and growing her Actifit reputation and AFIT stash. Recently she wrote me this response.
I'm actually working on a new strategy swapping 50% of my SPORTS rewards into AFIT to reach that 10k milestone, and delegating the rest to grow my passive income. Would love to hear your idea!
This got me thinking. What should I recommend?
This article is directly aimed at and I'll be dissecting her account to tell my thoughts. However, to be clear there is no right way to advance on Hive. There are many ways to proceed and what your path is may not be mine. However, as information is freely available on HIVE I'm taking a look at being "blunt" about how I would proceed.

What does this tell me?
Well, the fact that she has been on HIVE since November with a number of posts means that she is likely to continue. Horray!
The fact that she started up her own community shows she wants to grow things on HIVE. Horray!
The fact that she has more HP than Author rewards means she has staked a portion of her liquid HIVE. Which raises a question:
Should you stake your liquid Hive rewards?
Then there is the vote Mana at 92% meaning she is upvoting people but her vote value is 0.000 which means that her votes are currently symbolic only 😟
Then looking at her most recent posts. The majority are fairly short 150-250 word posts. Nothing wrong with short posts but I'm also seeing that she is getting very few upvotes on that posts. Unfortunately it isn't surprising because smaller posts tend not to get curation upvotes. I was thinking of bringing in the HELIOS curator but I believe they want 300+ word posts for upvotes (preferably with images).
As a result I'm seeing a lot of effort with very little rewards to show for it. That makes me a little bit sad.
Back to her questions:
What should she do with her tokens (SPORTS) and others
Where should she delegate
and I'm going to break that down a little bit because it all depends on :
First tidbit of advice though.
If you are bullish on HIVE stake all your live Hive to HP. If you are bearish on HIVE convert all your liquid HIVE to HBD and stake.
As for your current HP? Delegate almost all of it. Here is why
- You currently have 100% RC which means you aren't even close to using it all up. You have lots of mana in reserve to post and upvote which you aren't using.
- Your upvote is worth 0.000 which means when you vote it is (sorry to say) worthless. Delegate somewhere so (a) it adds to a curators upvote and (b) you get a bigger return on your HP.
If you upvote with 5HP or 100HP the result is the same. The poster gets a smile knowing someone clicked like..but gets no money and you get no curation reward. (there is which can alter that .. but lets save that for another time)
GOALS
If I was sitting down beside her I'd ask straight up. What are your goals on HIVE? Without knowing your goals it is very hard to figure out how to get there. However,, why do I feel I have any right to give advice?
Well, my account I built from absolutely ZERO Hive just hard work and dedication. Now it has a few thousand HP and an ACIFIT rank of over 100 with a big pile of AFITX tokens. This account? I started with ZERO HP just over a month ago and now have roughly 270HP, GLD tokens, HELIOS tokens and even a FIAT ETF (HDIF on TSX). My objectives: With the
account : show that real money can be made on HIVE. With the
account : show how the Great Little Dragon approach can make more money for the user while still supporting HIVE over the long term.
I'll give advice from a few different viewpoints because what I think is right is very possibly not what she will think is best.
What angles will I look at this from?
- Actifit as primary goal
- Hive as primary goal
- Earning on HIVE as primary goal
- How I'd advocate from a "Great Little Dragon" viewpoint
Actifit First
In her posts she has mentioned a few times that she is working hard to get her reputation up. If you want to be tops in Actifit that makes good sense. Posting regularly certainly helps. Holding AFIT and AFITX tokens certainly helps. Delegating to is useful. However the biggest boost to the actifit rank comes from purchasing the Rank Boost item that is available from the Actifit store. Post regularly and buy all the items regularly so that you can access the higher ranked items makes all the difference. Right now I've unlocked every item and I buy them regularly. That means I get 700 AFIT tokens each and every day. Sure I spend a lot of them but I do make more than I spend. Considering that at base level you get roughly 50 AFIT tokens daily there are a lot more available to be had.
With her primary goal being rank? Would I recommend selling SPORT for AFIT? Nah. AFIT is useful but it is way more important to just keep on buying the items every single day when they run out. Rank will absolutely follow. What would I recommend?
Make use of the AFIT burn for upvote. 200 AFIT for a 25% upvote makes a visible difference in HIVE earning but you only get one enhanced upvote for every two or three cycles. It means more earnings but its slow. IF you become a top 25 AFITX holder then you can get a larger ACTIFIT vote EVERY voting round. That meaningfully increases earning potential from the Actifit curation. So.... if I wanted to become a noticed Actifitter I would focus on getting AFITX so that in time I could get bigger upvotes and grow my HIVE stash.
Other things I would do if I was primarily focused on Actifit?
- Delegate to
- Write high quality content to improve the perception of the community
- Interact with members in the community and if she is curious I'll name a few but don't directly want to tag them.
- Recruit new members to Actifit so she can have friends to compete with and get the referral bonuses.
HIVE First
However, Actifit is just a tiny portion of Hive. The fact that I see her trying to start her own community means that I personally think she should focus on growing her HP and presence on HIVE in addition to the Actifit community. In addition she mentioned wanting to earn passive income (great idea!). Maximum impact on HIVE is not the same as strongest Actifit support. My next advice is based on whether she is bullish on HIVE or bearish on HIVE for the long term. Here are a few suggestions:
Forget about growing SPORTS tokens, AFIT tokens or AFITX tokens. Focus on tokens that give a higher return. My personal choices? EDSI, HBD (Staked), HP, or (yes I'm biased) GLD.
Focus on delegating to a community that gives a higher return. Right now I see she is delegating to
. Unfortunately that delegation gets her somewhere between 3-5% return. Delegate to
and the return is about 8% (in GLS tokens),
gives closer to 15%!
With the liquid coins? Perhaps buy HIVE and stake for more HP (better delegation rewards). Perhaps buy EDSI for 15% holding return in HIVE. Perhaps buy and stake HBD for 15% monthly return and stablecoin value. Or shameless pug here GLD tokens for roughly 8% weekly return and stablecoin(ish) valuation.
However, if the focus is HIVE first? I'd strongly recommend getting involved in a couple larger communities and networking to make connections and friends. Then invite some to her community 😁 She has already found that the people make all the difference. Actifit isn't a bad community but it isn't as vibrant as many others.
Earning First
Now I'm not a fan of the earning first approach and if, if I'm completely honest, the earning potential on HIVE isn't nearly as strong as it used to be. Major curators that used to give upvotes worth $4-5 HBD are currently only valued at a single dollar. For someone from London? It hardly seems worthwhile.
However if focused on earning first?
I would absolutely focus on joining other communities such as the Hive Learners which have multiple weekly prompts with regular curation for hard work. One strong Hive Learner post can be valued at 8-9 HP which means 20 posts (6 weeks work at three posts a week) would mean she would have as many HP as all her work since November!
Great Little Dragon Pathway
Why am I even mentioning the Great Little Dragon pathway? Well, because I think it is a good way to power up for new users and it is the pathway that this account is following. However, if is very much the community helps you and you help the community. Both for Great Little Dragons community and for HIVE in general.
Here's a quick version of how it works.
First: Someone asks to be mentored by the community and promises to help the community in return.
Second: They make regular, quality (400+ words, 1+ image, original content) content and tag the community curator ().
Third: The community burns HELIOS coins to increase the curation value for the post. Also the curation account upvotes the post as well.
Fourth: When the poster gets rewards? Well, if they (a) convert liquid HIVE to GLD and (b) delegate back to then they keep getting HELIOS burns for better upvotes.
Fifth: When GLD adds up, sell it and buy real world investments and use their dividends to bring back into HIVE.
Yeah I know it seems pretty restrictive but here is why it isn't totally terrible.
First: Delegating to earns regular weekly distributions equal to what most other curators distrubite. Plus delegations can always be stopped :)
Second: GLD tokens also pay distributions each week so no loss in holding the tokens until they add up to something valuable.
Third: Selling GLD to invest offchain? I love HIVE but I believe that having investments on and off chain are a key to making someone financially stable.
Fourth: Using dividends from offchain investments to bring money back into HIVE? Reinvestment into HIVE is key to its long term survival. Earn on HIVE then return earnings from HIVE to keep it stable for the long term.
Of course I should say :
Why?
Why does the community request what it does?
Well, every GLD token purchased is converted to HBD which earns 15%. That 15% is used give weekly distributions but also to purchase HELIOS so that the burn to earn can be continued. Why the delegation? Because every delegated HP means more earnings for the curation account and those who post. Most of it is returned (8% weekly payout) but still in the long term it means community delegation growth.
End result?
gets to make her own decision on where she wants to invest and why. It is her account to grow as she pleases.
- Would I hold SPORTS? Nope. Trade for something more valuable
- Would I delegate to
? Personally? No. The weekly distribution is just too low.
- Would I delegate more to another curation account? Yes. I just want to make sure every HP is put to work. (even if it goes to
). Of course leave 10-20HP undelegated so there is enough RC left to make daily posts 😁
- Would I recommend she increase her word count a little? Yes. I'd love to be able to bring in the HELIOS delegator to upvote her posts and support her but there is a minimum bar to hit first (sigh)
And that's it
Thanks for reading this far.
Hope I didn't bore you too much.
Or seem too condescending. I just feel there is no right way to do things on HIVE but there are different paths to follow depending on your goal. Appreciate your time in reading this far :)
As always, I love comments and questions.
.... although they may lead to really long posts like this one hahaha 🤣
