Guns and Roses were right about one thing, in their song number 2 from Appetite For Destruction, "It's So Easy" to love them. Truth be told, this band must be one of the few that on their first album, their debut, absolutely obliterated every record they could have come across. Undoubtedly, the most famous, transcendental, immortal and with the best setlist of songs they have ever composed. In fact, the lead singer of Skid Row himself, (another Los Angeles Hard Rock band) once stated (and I paraphrase) that without the Guns, they (Skid Row) probably would have taken their place. Honestly, we'll never know. But what is a reality is the scope of this wonderful production that is 35 years old. Can you believe it?
To put it in context a little better and make it a little more melancholy and fun. The Beatles split up in 1969. This album was released on 21 July 1987. Which means (mathematically) that today, July 2022, more years have passed (35, to be exact) than had passed since the break-up of the greatest rock and roll band in the history of music, and that mammoth selection of Hard Rock anthems, Appetite For Destruction. Which, if we analyse it, gives us a lot to think about. Also, personally, it makes me pay a lot of attention to the enormous and inclement passage of time. I was born in May 1990. Which means that this album already belonged to the past when I was giving my first whimpers in this life. Crazy, really.
En algo tenían razón los Guns and Roses, en su canción número 2 del Appetite For Destruction, "It's So Easy" amarlos. La verdad, esta banda debe ser una de las pocas que en su primer disco, en el debut, arrasó con absolutamente todos los récords que pudieran haberse topado. Sin lugar a dudas, el disco más famoso, trascendental , inmortal y con el mejor setlist de temazos que jamás hayan compuesto. Es más, una vez, el mismísimo vocalista de Skid Row, (otra banda de Los Ángeles de Hard Rock) alguna vez declaró (y parafraseo) que sin la aparición de los Guns, probablemente ellos (Skid Row) hubiesen tomado su lugar. Honestamente, nunca lo sabremos. Pero lo que sí es una realidad es el alcance de esta maravillosa producción que cumple 35 años ¿Pueden creerlo?
Para ponerlo un poco mejor en contexto y hacerlo un poco más melancólico y divertido. The Beatles se separaron en 1969. Este álbum salió el 21 de julio de 1987. Lo que quiere decir (matemáticamente) que hoy, julio de 2022, han pasado más años (35, para ser exactos) de los que habían pasado desde la separación de la banda de rock and roll más grande la historia de la música, y ese descomunal selección de himnos del Hard Rock, como es Appetite For Destruction. Lo que, si lo analizamos da bastante para pensar. Además, en lo personal hace que ponga mucha atención en el paso descomunal e inclemente que tiene el tiempo. Yo nací en mayo de 1990. Lo que significa que ya este álbum pertenecía al pasado cuando yo daba los primeros lloriqueos en esta vida. Una locura, la verdad.
I also want to bring you today, in this REVIEW of this album, a very, very personal impression of mine. Honestly, I can listen to this album, no matter the order, and never get bored. It is never enough for me. I always find new melodies, sounds, harmonies and I would even say that over the years I even feel different. I had it, (inherited from my older brother) in cassette format, in its original version (not pirated) when I was an 11 year old boy. And I loved it. Especially "My Michelle", which is song number 7. What's more, to this day it still fascinates me and is in my top three songs (including, of course, the entire discography) by Guns and Roses. That's how impactful it has been to have been able to hear this album.
An album that materially, as well as commercially, contributed to make the guys we know today as Slash, Duff McKagan, Izzy Stradlin, Dizzy Reed, Steven Adler, and of course Axl Rose, what they are today: Axl Rose, are what they are today. Although at the time, they were branded with a lot of epithets: as "just another Glam band", or "idiots", as was famously known at the 1992 MTV Music Awards, by Nirvana's drummer, in his unforgettable "Hi Axl, hi assholes!". But that's another story. Certainly, so much talent in one band must be difficult to handle and assimilate. What always marked the career of this amazing band from California, USA.
Quiero también traerles hoy, en esta REVIEW sobre este disco una impresión muy pero que muy mía. Honestamente, yo puedo escuchar este disco, sin importar el orden, y jamás aburrirme. Jamás es suficiente para mí. Siempre le hallo nuevas melodías, sonidos, armonías y diría; incluso, que con los años hasta lo siento distinto. Lo tuve, (heredado de mi hermano mayor) en formato de cassette, en su versión original (no pirateado) cuando era un niño de 11 años. Y lo amé. En especial "My Michelle", que es la canción número 7. Es más, hasta el día de hoy todavía me sigue fascinando y está en mi top tres de canciones (que incluyen, por supuesto, toda la discografía) hechas por Guns and Roses. Así de impactante ha sido haber podido oír este álbum.
Un disco que en lo material, así como en lo comercial, contribuyó para que los chicos que hoy conocemos como Slash, Duff McKagan, Izzy Stradlin, Dizzy Reed, Steven adler, y como no podría ser de otra forma: Axl Rose, sean lo que hoy son. Aunque en su momento, fueron tildados con un montón de epítetos: como "una banda de Glam más", o "idiotas", como fue célebremente conocido en la premiación de los MTV Musica Awards de 1992, por el baterista de Nirvana, en su inolvidable "Hi Axl, hi assholes!". Pero ésa es otra historia. Ciertamente, tanto talento en una única banda debe ser difícil de manejar y de asimilar. Lo que siempre marcó la carrera de esta banda increíble de California, Estados Unidos.
What can I tell you guys? "Paradise City, Welcome to The Jungle, Outta Get Me, Rocket Queen" and without forgetting the most famous and covered Guns song "Sweet Child o' Mine". The latter being the best known song in the band's history. Winner of multiple awards and the "culprit" of more than 30 million copies, only in the debut year (again, don't forget that we are talking about 1987). Simply insane. Not even Nirvana's Nevermind (1991) could match this figure in its first year of release. While the relationship of numbers to success is important as a measure of many things, it is not necessarily a representation of quality.
However, in Appetite For Destruction, everything that could go right, went right. Besides, these guys changed everything. Not only did they (still) hold the title of the best-selling album in history, but they imposed (along with the pre-existing fashion in America) the glam/rock fashion style, along with many other bands. As well as hair spray and really tight trousers. They forever changed the role of garage bands in the public eye, and musically they are impeccable. An issue that sometimes goes completely unnoticed but is not at all. The proof is in the pudding. When Duff, Matt and Slash left the band in the mid 90's, it was never the same again.
¿Qué les puedo decir, chicos? "Paradise City, Welcome to The Jungle, Outta Get Me, Rocket Queen" y sin dejar en el olvido, a la más famosa y versionada de las canciones de Guns "Sweet Child o' Mine". Siendo esta última la canción más conocida de la historia de la banda. Ganadora de múltiples distinciones y la "culpable" de más de 30 millones de copias, únicamente en el año debut (de nuevo, no olviden que hablamos de 1987). Sencillamente, demencial. Ni siquiera el Nevermind de Nirvana (1991) pudo igualar esta cifra en su año de lanzamiento por primera vez. Si bien, la relación de los números con el éxito es importante para medir muchas cosas, no necesariamente es una representación de la calidad.
No obstante, en Appetite For Destruction, todo lo que pudo salir bien, resultó perfectamente. Además, estos chicos lo cambiaron todo. No solo obtienen (aún vigente) el título del disco más vendido de la historia, sino que impusieron (junto a la preexistente moda en Estados Unidos) el estilo de moda glam/rock, junto a muchas otras bandas. Al igual que el spray en el cabello y los pantalones realmente ajustados. Cambiaron para siempre el papel que tenían las bandas de garage en el público, y musicalmente son impecables. Una cuestión, que a veces, pasa completamente desapercibida pero que no lo es en absoluto. Para prueba, un botón. Cuando Duff, Matt y Slash dejaron la banda a mediados de los 90's, jamás volvió a ser lo mismo.
To the point that they even had a legal dispute over the rights to the songs and the commercial and actual use of the band's name, which they lost (I'm referring to the former founding members I mentioned in the previous paragraph) and "Guns N' Roses" continued under the exclusive tutelage of Axl but without its former members (drums, bass and guitar), the result? Complete chaos and disaster. Mind you, this is my perspective and that's what I call it. I am responsible for my words, but I am convinced that I am not the only one who thinks this way. Not long ago I listened to the band's new songs (all reunited with their original members) and they sound quite promising. I'll leave one in the post for you to tell me what you think.
But it doesn't all end here. I wouldn't want to end these lines without expressing how wonderful it is to have listened to this band. How important they have been, not only for me, but for the world music scene. Guns N' Roses were formed in 1985 and in 2011, after their first attempt, they were able to enter the always controversial Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Let's remember that bands like Iron Maiden or Red Hot Chilli Peppers, have not yet entered such a distinguished award. But again, that's another story. One that I promise to develop as it should, with all its pros and cons, but another time. For now, Guns and Roses, 35 years of glory and debut, and thanks for making rock fun and passionate.
Al punto de que, incluso tuvieron una disputa legal por los derechos de las canciones y del uso comercial y real del nombre de la banda, la cual perdieron (me refiero a los ex integrantes fundadores que mencioné en el párrafo anterior) y "Guns N' Roses" continuó bajo la tutela exclusiva de Axl pero sin sus antiguos miembros (batería, bajo y guitarra), ¿el resultado? Hace no mucho escuché las nuevas canciones de la banda (toda reunida con sus miembros originales) y se oyen bastante prometedoras. Dejaré una en el post para que me digan qué les parece.
Pero no todo esto acaba aquí. No quisiera terminar estas líneas sin expresar lo maravilloso que es haber escuchado a esta banda. Lo importante que han sido, no solo para mí, sino para la puesta en escena musical mundial. Guns N' Roses se conformaron en 1985 y en el año de 2011, tras su primer intento, pudieron ingresar al siempre polémico Salón de la Fama del Rock and Roll. Recordemos que bandas como Iron Maiden o Red Hot Chilli Peppers, aún no han entrado a tan distinguido galardón. Pero de nuevo, ésa es otra historia. Una que prometo desarrollar como se debe, con todos sus pros y contras, pero en otra ocasión. Por ahora, Guns and Roses, 35 años de gloria y debut, y el agradecimiento por haber hecho al rock divertido y pasional.
I conclude with my personal appreciation of "Paradise City", more specifically how that song is composed. Which for me is on par with rock anthems like "We Will Rock You" or "Another Brick in The Wall". I simply have no idea if it was written with that marked intention (although I suspect it wasn't at all) but the fact is that anyone who takes in the 6 minutes and 48 seconds that the song lasts, I'm pretty sure they'll find it to be an impressive song. It gives you joy, excitement, it brings out your adventurous side, it's cheeky but above all it's incomparably rocking. And of course, Slash's mark, during the solo moment, is sublime (if you play guitar, you'll know exactly what I'm talking about). Geniuses, talented and unrepeatable. 35 years of rock.
Culmino con mi apreciación personal de "Paradise City", más específicamente cómo está compuesta esa canción. Qué para mí está a la par de himnos del rock como "We Will Rock You" o "Another Brick in The Wall". Sencillamente, no tengo la menor idea si fue compuesta con esa marcada intención (aunque sospecho que no fue para nada así) pero lo cierto es que cualquiera que se toma los 6 minutos con 48 segundos que dura el tema, estoy casi seguro que dará con que es una canción impresionante. Te da alegría, emoción, saca tu lado aventurero, es pícara pero sobre todo inigualablemente rockera. Y evidentemente, la marca de Slash, durante el momento del solo es sublime (si tocas la guitarra, sabrás exactamente de lo que hablo). Unos genios, talentosos e irrepetibles. 35 años de rock.
