Penny Lane is the name of one of the most famous songs in the history of music and universal culture of the last 70 years or more. Originally written by Paul McCartney and also attributed to John Lennon, both founding members of The Beatles and co-inhabitants of that emblematic place in the city of Liverpool, in England, UK; it is still remembered for a lot of incredible curiosities that I wanted to reveal and detail for you, my friends of Hive. Besides, I declare myself an incorrigible fan of this English band and just today, February 14th but 1967, it was presented to the world together with "Strawberry Field Forever", in a release as a promotional single for the world.
Penny Lane es el nombre de una de las canciones más famosas de la historia de la música y de la cultura universal de los últimos 70 años o más. Originalmente escrita por Paul McCartney y también atribuída a John Lennon, ambos miembros fundadores de The Beatles y cohabitantes de ese lugar tan emblemático de la ciudad de Liverpool, en Inglaterra, Reino Unido; es aún recordada por un montón de curiosidades increíbles que yo he querido revelar y detallar para ustedes, mis amigos de Hive. Además, me declaro un fanático incorregible de esta banda inglesa y justamente hoy, 14 de febrero pero de 1967, era presentada al mundo junto a "Strawberry Field Forever", en un lanzamiento como sencillo promocional para el mundo.
These geniuses of songwriting, rock and pop music made an anthem that is sung by millions of people all over the world, just by mentioning the neighbourhood where they were born, grew up and lived. This is how routine but brilliant the "Fab Four" turned out to be. In this song, they explained the barbershop where they used to get their haircut (Paul, John and George), the bank on the corner of Penny Lane junction, and even the firemen who heroically (as the song goes) act and are part of the scenery. The Anglican church right next to a roundabout (which is still both there as described) is a simile of the poetry and sense of belonging so deeply rooted in the creators of this piece.
"Penny Lane, there is a barber showing photographs of every head he's had the pleasure to know". These words bring the song to life and from its genesis, we witness a first-person narrative. As if Paul himself were walking the streets of Liverpool as he sings to us what his eyes see. I was always struck by the power of persuasion and talent that The Beatles had as a musical group. It is incredible, how a rhythm much more akin to a nursery rhyme or lullaby, at the same time has become (just to mention one example) the only recording in the English band's catalogue, for which they do not own the copyright or the rights of disclosure....
Estos genios de la composición y de la música rock y pop, hicieron un himno que es cantado por millones de personas en todo el mundo, sólo al mencionar el barrio donde nacieron, crecieron y vivieron. Así de rutinarios pero brillantes resultaban ser los "Fab Four". En este tema musical, explicaban la barbería en la que solían cortarse el cabello (Paul, John y George), también el banco ubicado en la esquina del cruce de Penny Lane, y hasta los bomberos que de manera heróica (según cuenta la canción) actúan y son parte del paisaje. La iglesia anglicana que está justo al lado de un rotonda (que aún, ambas siguen allí tal cual son descritas) es un símil con la poesía y el sentido de pertenencia tan arraigado de los creadores de esta pieza.

Estas palabras dan inicio y vida a la canción y desde su génesis, somos testigos de un relato en primera persona. Como si el mismísimo Paul estuviera transitando las calle de Liverpool mientras nos canta lo que sus ojos ven. Siempre me llamó poderosamente la atención el poder de persuasión y talento que The Beatles tuvo como agrupación musical. Es increíble, como un ritmo mucho más parecido a una canción infantil o de cuna, al mismo tiempo se haya convertido (por sólo mencionar un ejemplo) en la única grabación del catálogo de la banda inglesa, del cual no poseen los derechos de autor ni de divulgación...
The reason? Well, a long and boring story about "copyright" in the 60s. Something that Paul McCartney, vocalist and co-creator of this song always complained about and resented throughout his career. You see, after the death of Brian Epstein, friend and manager of The Beatles, they experienced their worst group decisions: like moving away from each other, composing separately and not together, getting involved in conflictive and difficult relationships, and above all becoming very radical in ideological or philosophical issues. In addition, they stopped playing live and neglected their copyrights..... Since Epstein never offered them to keep what was rightfully theirs...
¿La razón? Pues una larga y aburrida historia sobre el "copyright" en los años 60's. Algo de lo que Paul McCartney, vocalista y co creador de este canción siempre se quejó y resintió durante toda su carrera. Verán, después de la muerte de Brian Epstein, amigo y mánager de The Beatles, éstos experimentaron sus peores decisiones grupales: como alejarse los unos de los otros, componer por separado y no en conjunto, involucrarse en relaciones conflictivas y difíciles, y sobre todo radicalizarse muchísimo en temas ideológicos o filosóficos. Además, dejaron de tocar en vivo y por si fuera poco, descuidaron sus derechos de autor.... Ya que Epstein, jamás les ofreció conservar, lo que por derecho era del grupo...
Thus, the record label (EMI International) by legal contract and complete ignorance of the members of the greatest and coolest band in the history of mankind, suddenly were and were not (yes, as you read it) the owners of their own intellectual and cultural legacy.... And so decades and decades went by, until Michael Jackson, Beatles fan, and personal friend of Paul McCartney, contacted the latter to inform him that he had met a guy who knew a guy who knew a guy who knew who had bought the catalogue of all the Fab Four's songs... McCartney immediately contacted Lennon's widow, as well as George Harrison and Ringo, and together they put up the money and bought everything...
That is, all the songs (which were originally theirs! Complete insanity) except "Penny Lane". The only condition he had kindly demanded from the Beatles, who had pooled some of their financial wealth together to pay for owning what was theirs, was that he could not sell the well-known song that is the subject of this post. It was the favourite song of the seller's daughter. And he loved it too much to give it up, even to the greatest musicians who have ever lived, ever. For this reason, to this day, the English band has reclaimed their immeasurable creation of music but can do nothing with Penny Lane.
Por tanto, la casa disquera (EMI International) por contrato legal y rotundo desconocimientos de los miembros de la banda más grande y genial de la historia de la humanidad, de pronto eran y no eran (sí, así como lo estás leyendo) los dueños de su propio legado intelectual y cultural... Así pasaron décadas y décadas, hasta que Michael Jackson, fanático de The Beatles, y amigo personal de Paul McCartney, contactó a este último para informarle que había conocido a un sujeto que conocía a otro sujeto que sabía quién había comprado el catálogo de todas las canciones de los Fab Four... De inmediato McCartney se puso en contacto con la viuda de Lennon, además de George Harrison y Ringo, y juntos pusieron dinero y compraron todo...
Eso sí, todas las canciones (¡qué originalmente eran de ellos! Una completa demencia) menos "Penny Lane". La única condición que le había exigido amablemente a los Beatles, que juntando parte de sus riquezas económicas, habían reunido entre todos para pagar por ser dueños de lo que es suyo, era que no podía vender la reconocida canción que da sentido a este post ¿El motivo? Era la canción favorita de la hija del vendedor. Y éste la amaba demasiado como para poder ceder; incluso ante los músicos más grandes que hayan existido, jamás. Por esta razón, hasta el día de hoy, la banda inglesa ha recuperado su creación inconmensurable de música pero nada puede hacer con Penny Lane.
I, personally, know of no similar story to this in any other field of culture, entertainment or any human creation. I have searched and searched in many places for similar anecdotes or curious facts involving something at least remotely similar to what happened to the Beatles out of ignorance and professional immaturity, and I have found nothing.... To make it clear, it's as if the Walt Disney Company, due to a legal and professional oversight, had lost the margin of action and manoeuvre with "Bambi" or "Dumbo"... And furthermore, there would be no possible reason or motive to be able to fully recover what, a priori, is their property.
Yo, personalmente, no conozco una historia similar a ésta en ningún otro ámbito de la cultura, el entretenimiento o cualquier creación humana. He buscado y buscado por muchos lugares, anécdotas similares o hechos curiosos que involucren algo, al menos, remotamente similar a lo que les pasó a los Beatles por ignorancia e inmadurez profesional, y no he encontrado nada... Para que se entienda, es como si Walt Disney Company, por un descuido legal y profesional, hubiesen perdido el margen de acción y maniobra con "Bambi" o "Dumbo"... Y que además, no hubiese motivo ni razón posible para poder recuperar totalmente lo que, a priori, es de su propiedad.
So, every time you listen to this beautiful song, remember that the story behind it is much more complex and frankly interesting than the 3 minutes and something that it lasts... There is beauty, magic, transcendence, meaning, significance, sense of belonging, melancholy, nostalgia, magical thinking, first person narrative, rejoicing, sharp descriptions; and at the same time poetry in just a few minutes. More than 50 years have passed since the day of its release, and I, as someone who never lived the splendour of this song, decades later, and being a fervent lover of music, today I write about it with passion, love and strength. Curious and interesting things happen with music and human beings, don't you think so?
Así que, cada vez que escuchen esta hermosa canción, recuerden que la historia detrás de ella es mucho más compleja y francamente interesante que los 3 minutos y algo que dura... Hay belleza, magia, trascendencia, significado, sentido de pertenencia, melancolía, nostalgia, pensamiento mágico, relato en primera persona, regocijo, descripciones agudas; y al mismo tiempo poesía en tan solo unos pocos minutos. Más 50 años han transcurrido desde el día de su lanzamiento, y yo, que soy alguien que jamás vivió el esplendor de este tema, décadas después, y por ser un amante fervoroso de la música, hoy escribo de ella con pasión, amor y fuerza. Cosas curiosas e interesantes suceden con la música y los seres humanos, ¿no lo creen así?
