A while ago I was talking to about the Q Inspired by Music Community. I've seen her post there often, but since music isn't my thing I never paid much attention to the community. What I was interested to find out, is what the Q stands for. Quality I was told. That makes sense. Crucial for Hive. No one wants shit posts in their community. So basically it's any quality content inspired by music. Gotcha.
I was also told the community has an old photos initiative "If there is a photo that has some connection with music, a memory of a song, music, concert, event etc...". A couple of old photos immediately sprang to mind. I've recently got all my belongings shipped back to me, so I went to dig out my photo albums at once. It took me a while to finally find what I was looking for.
I'm going to take you right back to the first year of my university days. Let's just say it was quite a long time ago. Back then pretty much every university has a Chinese Society, and every Chinese New Year we would have our main function, a New Years dinner with a performance show from the students. In my first year, I got roped in to help out. I can't remember exactly what happened but I was asked to perform. Thankfully it wasn't singing otherwise I'm sure all the audience would have left during the show!! No, it was dancing. Not that I can dance either, but dancing is less tormenting than singing so the risk of the audience leaving was much smaller.
We did two dances. One was a traditional ribbon dance, like the ones you see in gymnastic. We dressed up in a Chinese red outfit, red being a lucky colour for Chinese New Year. One of the girls was very good and she even did a split, whilst the rest of us three stood behind flicking the ribbon round pretending we could dance. It was quite hilarious really.
The second dance ( yes, we did two ☺️) was a modern one, and we danced to a Canto pop (Hong Kong hits ) from the 80s called Monica. Monica was performed by Leslie Cheung, who was one of the, if not the most famous singer in the 80s thru to his death in 2003. Two decades after his death, he is still loved by many including many younger generation. Monica is a very catchy song, especially the chorus which goes "Thanks thanks thanks thanks Monica..." It has some funky moves complete with leg warmers and leotards which was quite common in the 80s, inspired by the famous Fame video. Check out this video for Monica.
For this dance, we wore our own outfit and tried to replicate an 80s look, not the leotards of course!! We even incorporated some of the moves from the video into our routine. I think the moment this photo was taken may have been the chorus, "Thanks thanks thanks thanks Monica..." where they do the finger pointing move in the MV.
It was naff, but when you're young and at uni you do naff things. It was a good laugh.
By the way, did anyone manage to identify me in those two photos? 2 Hive to the first person who guessed one of the photos correctly. Each person can only guess one of the photo. Spread and share the fun around for others!!
Update : Thanks to everyone who took part in the above. We have two winners!!
