When I was a little kid, there was a hallway in my parents house that freaked me out. It's actually the only hallway in the whole house, but it was just so long and dark. I would often not go down the hallway without turning on the light, or run down the hallway to get from one place to the other as quickly as possible.
In reality, it's only about 15 feet long, but it's still pretty rare that I ever go down to the very end of that hallway even today.
In case you missed the memo, it's Halloween today. It's the day that kids get to dress up as their favorite characters, college kids get to wear less clothes than they would at the beach, and couples get to show off just how clever they are with their couples costume.
I've never been much of a Halloween guy. Christmas was always more my jam back when I actually cared more about national holidays. I'd still say I lean more towards the Thanksgiving/Christmas season these days. Many of you may not recall this, but during the 80's there was a huge scare about random halloween candy and how it was laced with something or full of needles. I honestly don't remember, but the necessity for parents to inspect every piece of candy we got kind of ruined the whole mood.
Rumors like that still go around every now and then today, but with the introduction of fentanyl and designer drugs that look like candy, it's probably even more relevant.
One thing that's never been a huge thing on my list is scary movies. I'm equal parts fascinated and disinterested in them. Usually, I just look them up on the Internet and read a plot summary to see how clever or twisted they are/were. If there is something on during the day, I might flip back and forth between that and a sporting event on the weekend, but I don't actively follow the latest horror flicks.
If anything, I lean more towards the classics like Poltergeist and Halloween.
In case you haven't guessed, given it is Halloween, and it is Tuesday, the theme for this #threetunetuesday sponsored by is going to be "Spooky".
I jumped into my Google Photos library and typed in the word "Spooky" and the two photos I have shared are just a couple of the ones that came up. They seem pretty fitting to me.
You didn't come here for the photos though, let's get to the music!
Quite some time ago there was a show on TV called "Justified". It's probably one of my favorite shows of all time and I remember in one episode there was kind of a throw away call out to Atlanta Rhythm Section's Champagne Jam Live album. That prompted me to take a deep dive into ARS and their music.
While I had heard the original version of "Spooky" before by the Classics IV, I didn't realize that two members of that band went on to join Atlanta Rhythm Section and that is why ARS recorded their version of Spooky.
The original version was actually an instrumental only and later when lyrics were added it hit number 3 on the Billboard Hot 100. The ARS version on the other hand, only ever made it up to 17 on the Billboard charts.
It feels only right that I should also include something by Rob Zombie in this weeks list. "Dragula" is probably one of the only Rob Zombie songs I actually know. Back when he was with White Zombie I didn't listen to any of his music. It's actually after he went solo that he got on my radar.
Actually funny story, growing up with my peer group at church we were discouraged from listening to White Zombie because it was considered satanic. Given the stuff that is out there these days, I am guessing White Zombie would probably be considered pretty tame.
The main reason I needed to include something by Rob is simply for the fact that he has created several horror movies himself and he also revived the Halloween franchise. All the antics and optics aside, he is actually a pretty creative guy. The Halloween reboots were critical successes if I recall correctly.
You should definitely check them out. I'd watch the originals first, so you can really appreciate them. Just skip III. That one has nothing to do with anything and is pointless.
It couldn't be more simple than this one. The "Halloween" theme from the movie Halloween by John Carpenter. will actually leave the room when this song comes on. She can't stand it. Looking back now, I will totally admit that Halloween isn't the scariest movie out there. As far as slashers go, it isn't even the goriest (not even close), but there is just something classic about it.
Michael Myers isn't fast, or clever, he is just constant, consistent, and inevitable. I think that is what makes him so scary. We have Halloween to thank for introducing the world to Jamie Lee Curtis, Danielle Harris, and ultimately a pop culture icon that will be remembered for decades.
All thanks to a Captain Kirk mask that they melted down to use for the movie.
I was going to throw in a bonus tune for you, but I decided not to. It was going to be a song from Phantom of the Opera because although many see it as a love story, it's more of a horror story to me. In fact, if you ever read the book, it's actually closer to a horror story that you would believe.
There are certain aspects of the musical that don't actually make as much sense unless you have read the book. You can find a bit more about it here.
