On the night between september 26 e 27, 1256 a servantof cardinal Pietro Capocci accidentally or intentonially threw the sacred image of the Madonna painted on a slab of terracotta into the well of the stable. Before the slab of terracotta touched the bottom of the well, the wathers rose up out of the well and flooded the stable bringing back to the surface the sacred image of the Madonna.
The cardinal was awakened in the night and rusced into the barn where he saw the image of the Madonna swaying on the water, with devout amazament he picked it up
Pope Alexander iv had it placed in the chapel near the well from where it had resurfaced. Since then until today the Madonna of the well grants graces and healings also througt itsmiraculous waters.
It rises between via del Tritone and via del corso a stone's throw from the Trevi fountain.
