Hello Hiveians! Have you ever heard of the weapon called the Sai? My teacher is a 7 dan black belt and he is the 3rd best martial artist in the whole world! He tells me that it is called Sais, instead of "Sai" like Wikipedia and other websites tell me. I use this weapon and it is actually two for holding them in both of your hands. Maybe that's why my teacher calls them "Sais" because they're plural.
Anyways, today I am going to tell you some useful info about this weapon! :-)
Just so you know, I found out about some of this information from Wiki and other websites. :-)
The parts:
In this picture, I drew all the names of the parts in English and Japanese, since this weapon is from Japan.
I showed it to my Kyoshi (teacher) and he was impressed that I would use some time to learn these names. A friend of mine named "Santi" does classes with us and he was jealous that I knew this. So I made him a copy of my drawing so he can take it home to memorize it.. He is probably going to show it off to some of his friends haha. π
Sais technique & questions I asked my teacher about it
Did you know that only 5 katas are commonly taught with the Sais? This weapon is used to strike and block. It's used in Ninjitsu and Kobujitsu :-)
My teacher told me that traditionally, the Sais for men have a longer blade, the ones for the women are shorter. That's why Santi's are longer than mine. The other day I asked my teacher, why? He said because the technique for women are shorter than men's. That's also why he taught me a kata where my actions are short. Santi's kata has longer techniques and it has a bunch of jumps and spins.
If you like you can tell your friends about this. I hope you enjoyed this post, and enjoy the rest of your day!
