Are you guilty of performative taste or the bandwagon effect?
Sometimes I see something ugly and call it ugly but hours later, it blows up and people start gushing about how beautiful it is and I just ignore to avoid being called classless or broke.
Social media has a way of making you doubt your eyes and everyone tends to nod along because they don't want to be the one who doesn't get it, expecially people who initially had a different opinion. Taste is now a treated like a status symbol and if you don't like a thing, people just believe you're not sophisticated enough or can't afford it. Isn't that weird?
I'm not saying "ugly" can't be a brand, anything can be a brand, "ugly" can be cool, but its actually jarring that most people can't call something what it is and stand by it. It actually makes me wonder if people actually like a thing or if they just want to be part of the group that likes it.
