"Geisha"

Hello Friends! As you know, I like variety in the subject matter for my painting, so today it's once again time for a portrait. For a change, I've done this one entirely in oil pastel, without any gouache underpainting as I usually do. This is actually a bit wasteful, using up tons of pastel, but I wanted to see what it would look like.
Geisha, which roughly translates to "person of the arts," are traditional Japanese entertainers who have been trained in various forms of the performing arts such as music, dance, and tea ceremonies. They are often seen wearing a traditional kimono and white makeup, with their hair styled in intricate designs.
Geisha are not prostitutes, as is often mistakenly believed! Geisha are highly skilled entertainers who are hired to entertain guests at parties and events with their various talents.
Another important aspect of geisha culture is their strict training and apprenticeship system. Young girls, called maiko, begin their training as early as the age of 15, and it can take up to 5 years before they become full-fledged geisha.
To be honest, I have no idea whether I painted a geisha or a maiko, as I painted this from imagination, using only some reference pics of Japanese women to get the facial proportions right. So this is most certainly influenced by imagery I snapped up in our western media over the years.
However, I aimed to capture the elegance and beauty of what I believe to be an accomplished geisha. O.K., I'm a dude and therefore a klutz at putting makeup on a face. 😀 I still hope you enjoy my painting as much as I enjoyed painting it!
Hallo Freunde! Wie ihr wisst, mag ich Abwechslung bei den Themen meiner Malerei, deshalb ist es heute mal wieder Zeit für ein Porträt. Zur Abwechslung habe ich dieses Bild komplett in Ölpastell gemalt, ohne Gouache-Untermalung, wie ich es sonst mache. Das ist zwar etwas verschwenderisch und verbraucht tonnenweise Pastell, aber ich wollte sehen, wie das Ergebnis aussehen würde.
Geishas sind traditionelle japanische Unterhalterinnen, die in verschiedenen Formen der darstellenden Kunst wie Musik, Tanz und Teezeremonien ausgebildet wurden. Man sieht sie oft in einem traditionellen Kimono und mit weißem Make-up, und ihre Frisuren sind aufwendig gestylt.
Geisha sind keine Prostituierten, wie oft fälschlicherweise angenommen wird! Geishas sind hochqualifizierte Unterhalterinnen, die angeheuert werden, um Gäste auf Partys und Veranstaltungen mit ihren verschiedenen Talenten zu unterhalten.
Ein weiterer wichtiger Aspekt der Geisha-Kultur ist das strenge Ausbildungs- und Lehrlingssystem. Junge Mädchen, Maiko genannt, beginnen ihre Ausbildung bereits im Alter von 15 Jahren, und es kann bis zu 5 Jahre dauern, bis sie eine vollwertige Geisha sind.
Um ehrlich zu sein, habe ich keine Ahnung, ob ich eine Geisha oder eine Maiko gemalt habe, denn ich habe das Portrait aus der Fantasie heraus gemalt und nur einige Referenzbilder von japanischen Frauen verwendet, um die richtigen Gesichtsproportionen zu bekommen. Das Gemälde ist demnach hundertprozentig von Bildern beeinflusst, die ich im Laufe der Jahre in unseren westlichen Medien aufgeschnappt habe.
Mein Ziel war es jedoch, die Eleganz und Schönheit einer, wie ich glaube, vollendeten Geisha einzufangen. Okay, ich bin ein Kerl und garantiert ein Tollpatsch, wenn es darum geht, ein Gesicht zu schminken. 😀 Ich hoffe trotzdem, dass euch mein Bild genauso viel Spaß macht wie mir das Malen!
