Today I'd like to show you a new painting challenge I set for myself. As always, I used a free photo from unsplash.com for inspiration. I mentioned previously that I'm finding blending with gouache very difficult, so the shading of a face seemed a good place to work on that.

Gouache will reactivate when it's wetted again, so related to the blending issue would be applying a glaze to an existing paint layer. Apparently, that's an issue I need to work on some more: my glaze turned out too fat and thus streaky, and I all but ruined the delicate skin tone underneath.  :-(

However, I'm pleading extenuating circumstances here! Our friend Hive account@leoplaw is a professional painter whose work I admire. (Check his blog!) In a recent exchange Leo suggested to help the spontaneity of my painting along by applying a little lubrication in the form of some wine. I gladly followed his advice. After all, who am I to argue with a professional? Unfortunately, "some" being a rather vague description of quantity, I overdid it just a little, and it shows.  :-)

Seriously though, the glaze was too fat, because I tried too kill two birds with one stone and increase the darkness at the bottom of the painting with the glaze. Now that I analyze this, that was a dumb idea and I should have known better. Live and learn...

Heute möchte ich euch eine neue Kunstherausforderung zeigen, die ich mir selbst gestellt habe. Wie immer habe ich ein kostenloses Foto von unsplash.com als Inspiration verwendet. Ich hatte bereits erwähnt, dass mir das "Verblenden" mit Gouache sehr schwer fällt, also schienen mir die Schattierungen eines Gesichts eine gute Stelle, um dieses Problem in den Griff zu bekommen.

Gouache wird reaktiviert (verflüssigt), wenn sie erneut angefeuchtet wird. Das Auftragen einer Lasur auf eine bestehende Farbschicht ist also mit dem Problem des "Verblendens" eng verwandt. Offenbar ist das etwas woran ich noch arbeiten muss: Meine Lasur war zu fett und daher streifig, und ich habe den zarten Hautton darunter fast ruiniert.  :-(

Aber ich plädiere hier auf mildernde Umstände! Unser Freund Hive account@leoplaw ist ein professioneller Maler, dessen Arbeit ich bewundere. (Schaut euch seinen Blog an!) In einem kürzlichen Austausch schlug Leo vor, die Spontaneität meiner Malerei durch ein wenig Schmiermittel in Form von Wein zu unterstützen. Ich habe seinen Rat gerne befolgt. Wer bin ich denn, dass ich einem Profi widersprechen würde? Leider habe ich es leicht übertrieben, denn "ein wenig" ist eine ziemlich vage Mengenangabe, und das sieht man jetzt auch.  :-(

Aber im Ernst, die Lasur war auch deshalb zu dick, weil ich versucht habe, zwei Fliegen mit einer Klappe zu schlagen und die Dunkelheit am unteren Rand des Bildes mit der Lasur zu verstärken. Wenn ich das im Nachhinein analysiere, war das eine dumme Idee und ich hätte es besser wissen müssen. Das Leben ist ein ständiger Lernprozess...
