Przedostatni dzień w Warszawie, a dla mnie ostatni, kiedy mogłem się swobodnie poszwendać tam, gdzie mnie nogi poniosą. Jutro żonę wypiszą ze szpitala, więc pewnie jeszcze na chwilę razem zahaczymy o centrum stolicy. Dlatego dziś swoje kroki skierowałem na prawą stronę Wisły, na Pragę. Moim celem była ekspozycja prac Banksy’ego – nietuzinkowego artysty ulicznego z Bristolu, który od ćwierć wieku szokuje świat nieszablonowym postrzeganiem otaczającej nas rzeczywistości.

[ENG] The penultimate day in Warsaw, and for me, the last one where I could freely wander wherever my legs took me. My wife gets discharged from the hospital tomorrow, so we'll probably swing by the city center together for a moment. That's why today I directed my steps to the right side of the Vistula, to the Praga district. My goal was the exhibition of works by Banksy—an extraordinary street artist from Bristol who, for a quarter of a century, has been shocking the world with his unconventional perception of the reality surrounding us.

Od lat każda z jego prac jest szeroko komentowana; przeważają te ściśle związane z krytyką militarnego ucisku i konsumpcjonizmu. Kilka lat temu głośna była sprawa happeningu, jakiego się dopuścił podczas aukcji jednej z reprodukcji słynnej pracy Dziewczynka z balonem, kiedy to w ramie obrazu ukryto niszczarkę. Chwilę po wylicytowaniu tego dzieła za 860 tys. funtów, zostało ono zniszczone przez pocięcie. O dziwo, ta rama z niszczarką w środku i do połowy zniszczoną pracą kilka lat później osiągnęła na aukcji niewyobrażalną cenę przeszło 16 mln funtów.

[ENG] For years, each of his works has been widely commented on; most are strictly related to the criticism of military oppression and consumerism. A few years ago, the happening he orchestrated during the auction of one of the versions of the famous work Girl with Balloon became famous, when a shredder was hidden inside the frame. Moments after the work was auctioned for £860,000, it was destroyed by being shredded. Surprisingly, that frame with the shredder inside and the half-destroyed artwork fetched an unimaginable price of over £16 million at an auction a few years later.

Większość jego prac jest bardzo wymowna i nie potrzebuje dodatkowego wyjaśnienia. Oprócz przekazu, który kryje się w jego rysunkach, ważne jest też ich umiejscowienie. Pojawiają się w takich miejscach, gdzie nadinterpretacja nie jest możliwa, a przekaz jest zupełnie oczywisty. Seria prac sygnowana jego pseudonimem pojawiła się m.in. na ogarniętej wojną Ukrainie.

[ENG] Most of his works are very expressive and need no further explanation. Besides the message hidden in his drawings, their placement is also important. They appear in places where overinterpretation is impossible, and the message is completely obvious. A series of works signed with his pseudonym appeared, among other places, in war-torn Ukraine.

Ostatnia praca Banksy’ego pojawiła się we wrześniu tego roku na fasadzie londyńskiego Royal Courts of Justice. Dzieło przedstawia sędziego w tradycyjnej todze i peruce, który z całą siłą uderza młotkiem w bezbronnego protestującego. Grupy aktywistów chwaliły mural jako odważną obronę wolności obywatelskich. Władze zareagowały natychmiast: mural zasłonięto w ciągu kilku godzin, a dwa dni później zniknął ze ściany.

[ENG] Banksy's latest work appeared this September on the facade of London's Royal Courts of Justice. The work depicts a judge in traditional robes and wig striking a defenseless protester with a gavel with full force. Activist groups praised the mural as a bold defense of civil liberties. The authorities reacted immediately: the mural was covered up within a few hours, and two days later, it disappeared from the wall.

Następnie udałem się na warszawską Starówkę; w tym roku jeszcze tam nie byłem. Nowością dla mnie było lodowisko na środku rynku wokół pomnika Syrenki. Tylko śniegu brakuje, ale z drugiej strony to dobrze, bo przyjemniej mi się szwendało po mieście.

[ENG] Next, I went to the Warsaw Old Town; I hadn't been there yet this year. A novelty for me was the ice rink in the middle of the market square around the Mermaid statue. The only thing missing is snow, but on the other hand, that's good, because it was more pleasant to roam around the city.
