Was hoping to go up to the mountains. Took a while to get investing stuff done and got bogged down working through some stuff for my son. Decided to do a short drive to seek out some orchids, do some shopping and pick up a parcel
Found the first hyacinth orchid this side in a known spot - just a few flowers on this spike - dipodium variegatum
Close up showing the calli on the labellum - stay with me in photo not quite in focus
This one has a different flow - more like a Brazilian
In previous years this slice of grass next to the fence had heaps of onion orchids. This season they mowed early and chopped the forming leaves off 1.5 inches above the ground = no chance of producing flowers spikes. Found one short one that made it. Another year to wait for recovery
Hakea flowering just above the hyacinth orchid
Lots of Christmas bells open. Got one photo somewhat in focus - always a tough target to get in focus
Did find one bonnet open - cryptostylis erecta
Cicada husk - the bigger versions were buzzing on the trees
Pine leafed geebung just opening from the bottom
Lots of conesticks flowers - was really a flow of white like yesterday
Purple fan flower
Wattle flower - a mix of white and yellow
Pea flower - quite hairy
Yellow flax lily and a bug
Angophora flowering says summer is here
Always a magnet for insects - two types of ant
ID challenge - looks like a rice flower but petals are more like a coral heath flower
Found one only narrow-leafed hemigenia - probably the one photographed last time down here
Side on shot will be new
More angophora - look for the bugs. The flowers go from full to no petals quite quickly
A different bug - maybe a fly
Was hoping to find a purple fringe lily for my friend coming out of eye surgery - she loves purple
This track in Ku-ring Gai Chase NP has yielded snake orchids before. This walk I focused on looking on the other side of the track - found a few sites - high up - say 3 metres in scribbly gums
Often found in a recess where a branch has broken off. The combo of high up and the white of a scribbly gum makes it a lot easier
Sadly no flowers in these 3 spots
Another example of the broken branch siting
Grey spider grevillea
Found one leptospermum squarrosum flower open
Up higher - cymbidium suave
One more purple fringe lily for my friend
Quite surprised to find a banksia serratum flower developing
Somebody is studying the angophora flowers - bags collecting what?
Shopped after the walk. Cooked Italian meatballs for dinner - friend visiting
Did get the investing post done
