Rained a bit overnight but was dry at a slightly earlier start to ride from Venus Bay to coffee shop in Lower Tarwin
Rolling clouds are over the hills ahead - not our problem, as we will turn left to head south for a while after coffee.
Pub at Lower Tarwin - the front section was added after the building first went up
Slight incline on the drag away from the sea to the ridge line ahead - where the windmills are - did go for a while before we passed the last of the windmills
Downhill to Walkerville - we skipped riding down to cafe there as it is a steep climb back out. Wait till we reach Fish Creek for lunch. Fab views of Wilson's Promontory as we cycled away from the coast with Cape Liptrack NP on the sea side
Did spy a flash of pink - rose hyacinth orchid on the road verge. Easy to ID dipodium roseum from the outward curving petals
Seeded plant alongside
Did find a few more - 5 in all - study the detail differences, especially on the labellum stripes and the hairy bit on the labellum
Not sure the differences are enough for a different ID
This one is more like the first one - especially the hairy stuff on the labellum
What is consistent is the size of the spots and the curved petals and sepals. Great to find a few plants - 6 plus a few seeded - on a road never ridden before
Context photo - have a feeling there will be good autumn orchids here in the NP after some rain.
A wider view of Wilson's Promontory. From here the road was a series of rollers that needed "easy ride hard, hard ride easy" riding. Was able to roll over a few up bits without mega gear changes.
Intersection with main road down to the Prom shows the up shape. Was hoping the road to Fish Creek would be down. It was after another 400m up.
Fish Creek Hotel with a few riders right of frame. We stopped at the GSRT picnic area for our lunch. Did my lunch and went walking
Information sign for what is ahead of us going to Meeniyan this afternoon and back to Fish Creek tomorrow
Fish Creek statue taken from over the road. Went closer to read the plaque on the horse trough - then noticed the materials used for the statue
Closer shot - they are segments of different types of road signs shaped to form a fish
A few of the old buildings - butter factory
Memorial hall
A few houses
Old telegraphic centre - now a post centre
A few interesting sculptures - 3 wood blocks hollowed out and stood on top of each other
Creek crossing
A short trestle bridge crossing a roadway
A new art form - mushroom trail photos
A deeper brown
Nice GSRT sign - photo with no people
Endpoint for today. Must say it was disappointing to find all old rail buildings are gone
Showered and walked back to town to buy provisions for tomorrow. A fee streetscape shots - sign and towering gums
Community hall
Town pub next to our motel. We walked over there later for dinner
Enjoyed a cold beer and a snack on a lovely evening before pub time
Wheel art in community garden
Solid ride - a lot of it bothered by noises from the front of the bike in headseat or front hub
Good dinner in the pub. $30 as a steak special is getting a bit rich
