After two very full, action-packed days, Friday was a rest day. I was feeling a bit run down, so I didn't even bother going out of the house besides a little sunshine on the rear sundeck of my mom's condo.
The highlight of the day was a big shabbat dinner table with my three other siblings, who are visiting from all over the world. My younger brother was visiting from Portland, Oregon, and my younger younger sister came with her boyfriend (who I got to meet for the first time) from Denver, Colorado. My older younger sister, her husband, and two kids, have been staying with my mom for 6 weeks since the conflict in Israel began. They were lucky to be able to get out on a plane to Athens a few days after October 7.
My mom also invited her boyfriend over for dinner. It amuses me that she is 70+ years old but still calls the man she dates a boyfriend. It sounds so childish, but so it is. My sister and her daughter made some fresh challah, traditional braided bread eaten for shabbat. Other dinner standouts included my mom's chicken soup, bourbon and brown sugar sweet potatoes, and a kosher smoked brisket my mom got from a local rabbi in town who moonlights as a BBQ pitmaster.
My uncle, aunt, and Magic the Gathering playing cousin visited for dessert. We got a gluten-free, dairy-free chocolate cake to celebrate my brother's birthday. It was surprisingly tasty for all those dietary restrictions. My cousin also brought over a nice sampling of craft beers and ciders, but I was in no condition to drink. I was still feeling a bit under the weather from the last few days, and I've mostly given up drinking alcohol anyways.
I tried watching my University of Texas football team play, but I couldn't stay awake on the sofa. I was exhausted and went to bed at 10 pm. My body was craving a good night sleep. Truth be told, I probably won't be too active Saturday or Sunday either, as I clean up around the apartment in Brooklyn and help my partner get set up for the holiday season. I might go out to the club -- Elsewhere of course -- to see Odd Mob and Omnom, but I'll wait to see how I feel later tonight. Catch ya tomorrow!
