Greetings of the day,
We spent the entire day today training in IV cannulation, which is a very important clinical skill in nursing practice. All the nursing staff and trainees had gathered in the training hall on time since morning. The main objective of this training was to better understand the correct technique, infection prevention and patient safety related to intravenous access.
The training started with a theoretical session, in which the indications, contraindications and complications of IV cannulation were discussed in detail. The trainer explained how important proper vein selection is and how incorrect technique can increase the risk of infiltration, phlebitis or infection. Site preparation, hand hygiene and aseptic precautions were explained step-by-step through slides, which is clearly visible in the photos also.
After this the practical session started, where hands-on practice of IV cannulation was done on a mannequin arm model. All participants wore gloves and practiced cannula insertion as per aseptic technique. The trainers were guiding at every step, like tourniquet application, vein palpation, bevel position, flashback confirmation and cannula fixation. During this, it was also emphasized how important proper disposal of sharps and biomedical waste management is.
Seeing the focus and seriousness of the audience during the training, it was clear that everyone wants to learn this skill in the right way. Questions were also asked, like how to do cannulation in difficult veins and what precautions should be taken in pediatric or elderly patients. This interactive approach was making the training more effective.
The day-long training taught us that IV cannulation is not just a procedure but a combination of knowledge, skill and patient safety. Such regular training strengthens clinical practice and improves healthcare quality. There was definitely fatigue, but the satisfaction of learning was much more than that.
