I found a good dentist a few years ago and for a while my son and I went every 3 months for checkups. After the outbreak of COVID-19, we continued to go regularly, but one day I got sick on the day of the checkup and canceled, and I stopped going since then.
In January of this year, when I ate some rice cakes sent from my parents' house, a filling in my back tooth came off. I had not been to the dentist for a checkup for several months, so it was somewhat difficult for me to go to the dentist, and while I was dawdling, the tooth developed a cavity, which seems to have worsened. Recently, it started hurting at a moment's notice, and he finally made the decision to make a dentist appointment.
But apparently it was too late. After the examination, I found that the tooth could no longer be kept and had to be extracted. Furthermore, it was a difficult tooth for my "good dentist" to extract, and she gave me a letter of referral to go to the oral surgery department of a university hospital. I have never had a tooth pulled before, so I am quite scared.
But that "good dentist" is still a good dentist. She never said to me, "Why didn't you come earlier?" or "Why did you leave it alone before it got this bad?!". I had a cleaning prior to the extraction and the dental hygienist was very kind. She said, "Yes, yes, you are brushing well. You are by no means a bad tooth brusher, and your mouth shows that you are doing it right. It's just that I haven't been able to get rid of some of the residue between the teeth".
Yesterday I went to the university hospital where I was referred. The hospital is a few subway stops away, about 150 meters from the station. It was a good opportunity for Actifit, but it was not a brisk walk, despite the beautiful fall weather. Changing hospitals is always depressing. I wondered what kind of doctor would be in charge... I didn't want to show him or her inside my mouth and have them say something coercive, I thought as I went through the reception desk and entered the examination room.
Well, as it turned out, their response was quite clerical and streamlined, but not cold, and I was very comfortable with it. Is that what a university hospital is like? Or was the doctor in charge good? The extraction process and risks were explained to me, and I signed the consent form. After adjusting my schedule to the availability, we decided on the end of October as the date for the extraction. Perhaps wisdom teeth will be extracted after that.
So, take care of your teeth, everyone. My sons' checkups are already booked for the week after next.
