So today at practice I saw something interesting happen. I try to switch things up during practice as to not make it too repetitive for the kids.
So today I gave them an exercise in which they stand at the baseline, pass the ball to someone standing at the elbow, sprint to close out and have to go one on one from there. I know there were a lot of basketball terms just now but focus on the one on one part 😃.
Basically they enjoy this part as they get to show their skills in a "game situation".
Now I've created an environment where we get to have fun. The whole group watches every matchups a reacts to great moves or made baskets.
Imagine a group of kids yelllling "ohhhhhhh" after a great crossover.
It's very much part of the basketball culture, the reactions are loud (not like tennis or golf) .
I mean it's all fun and games and I hope to create an environment where if someone scores on you or makes a great move, you adjust to it, take it as a challenge and make sure you do better next time. Or get your revenge and score on that same person once you get the chance.
Now here is the thing about a group environment and I've said this in one of my previous posts. Not all kids react the same way.
I noticed one little guy that's normally an active participant completely shut down.
Someone scored on him twice and the "ohhhhh" from the group caused him to shut down. It got to him.
Now, if that is your natural reaction, I'll give you some room for it, but the key here is to turn it into motivation of some kind cause "life goes on" and in this case "the game literally goes on".
You can't quit midgame or mid exercise.
After practice I had a talk with him and I hope he takes my message to heart.
He's going to have to learn how to deal with failing or losing.... And since it's basketball, he's going to have to learn to deal with it IN FRONT OF OTHERS.
On the other hand, every other player got a sudden boost from this exercise. They we're very excited and tried to do their best.
I'm going to see how he responds in the next practice and if it's not going well I'll split the group so there's less 'pressure'.... Thoughts are welcome...
P.s. since I'm posting this true Actifit!
Check out my steps for today 😎😎😎.
Cheers,
Gyanno
