My friend and I played a couple of rounds of disc golf out at my favorite easy eighteen-hole course. I won both rounds with a +2 score on each of them. My friend scored a +5 in the first round and a +8 in the second.
Partway through the second round, we were joined by a beginner who was playing for around a year. I loaned him a couple of discs and he enjoyed playing along with us.
It is always fun to have other people join up with you on the course. For only having played for a year he was doing well but having trouble making par on most of the holes in the last part of the course. At one point I was a bit worried about losing a disc on a difficult hole but he did fine and kept the disc in the fairway.
I noticed he was throwing a forehand flick with a thumber grip. I had never seen anyone doing that before but it seemed to be working for him. I resisted giving some unsolicited advice and trying to explain all the more conventional grips that he could be using. Instead, I think I will try using that grip sometime and see if it works for me. Grips are very individual and it seems like there are many ways to grip the disc out there.
