As I strolled along the gentle path beside the River Windrush, I was captivated by the traditional limestone cottages, their honey-hued stones glowing in the sunlight. The architecture is simply stunning, and I learned that many of these buildings date back to the 17th century, which added a fascinating historical layer to my walk.
Along the way, I met a friendly local couple, Judith and Tom, who were out with their dog, a lively spaniel named Daisy. They were more than happy to share stories about the area’s history, including the fascinating fact that Bourton-on-the-Water was once a center for wool production in the Middle Ages. They also pointed out some of the great walking paths that lead to nearby villages like Upper and Lower Slaughter, known for their beautiful scenery and historical significance.
As I continued, I passed the iconic Old Mill, which has been transformed into a museum showcasing the history of the village. The sound of the water flowing over the millrace was soothing and reminded me of how important watermills were in the community’s agricultural past.
The walk was also a treat for the senses. I could smell the wildflowers and hear the cheerful chirping of birds, and I even spotted a few ducks paddling lazily in the river. Near the end of my journey, I took a break by a scenic spot called the "Cotswold Motte," an ancient earthwork believed to date back to the Norman period, which provided a perfect vantage point to take in the rolling hills and valleys of the Cotswolds.
