As I set off from the charming village of Bourton-on-the-Water, often referred to as the "Venice of the Cotswolds," I was immediately struck by the quaint stone bridges and the gentle flow of the River Windrush. The bridges date back to the 17th century and really add to the fairytale feel of the village.
My route took me through lush green fields dotted with sheep and hedgerows bursting with wildflowers. The vibrant yellows and purples of the flowers contrasted beautifully with the deep green of the grass. I couldn’t help but stop frequently to take photos and admire the beauty of the landscape.
Along the way, I met a couple of locals who were out tending to their gardens. One elderly gentleman, who introduced himself as Mr. Smith, shared delightful anecdotes about the history of the village. He mentioned that parts of Bourton-on-the-Water date back to the Roman era, and I was fascinated to learn how the village expanded during the 19th century due to the rise of the wool industry.
As I continued my walk, I encountered a small group of hikers who were also exploring the area. We struck up a conversation, sharing our favorite spots in the Cotswolds. They recommended visiting the nearby village of Stow-on-the-Wold, known for its antique shops and rich history.
I took their advice and headed there after my walk. Stow-on-the-Wold has a beautiful market square and a lovely church, St. Edward's, with its unique door that features a stone archway covered in ivy. It felt like stepping back in time!
