Last night we went out with some friends to that spot where all the street-food folks set up their stands, just to get some mahyāveh.
(Mahyāveh is this Southern dish whose star ingredient is a fish sauce brownish made by grinding and fermenting a certain kind of fish. They spread it on bread, then bake it with cheese and eggs. Wild stuff, but amazing.)
And then—of course—there was a knife fight.
Two guys, not even twenty, started mouthing off at each other, and one of them suddenly whipped out a blade. The woman cooking the mahyāveh went full warrior mode, started cussing them out, pulled a stick from under her setup, and yelled at them until they backed off. We just… calmly watched the whole thing like it was part of the menu.
Then she came back, totally unfazed, finished our mahyāvehs, and we ate right there like nothing happened. The entire scuffle lasted maybe two or three minutes. Apparently that’s just… normal around here.
My question is: how many of you would consider that a normal night out?!
