Last night’s wind whipped through the streets, and I was grateful for the cooler air that followed, making sleep finally somewhat bearable. By morning, the air felt fresh, light, and unusually low on humidity, the kind that makes you want to step outside. So I did. A peaceful walk through Tiergarten seemed like the perfect route for the day, the kind of calm that clears the mind, until some clueless guy decided to ruin my breathing exercises at the lake, puffing away on his cigarette and polluting the crisp air. As I headed back, though, I spotted something I had seen a few times already but never close enough to get a good shot, a cormorant, wings stretched wide, drying itself atop a waterway sign. In case you didn’t know, cormorants lack the oils that make most birds’ feathers water-resistant, so they rely on the sun and wind to dry out. It was a quiet moment of nature doing its thing, something the smoky air couldn't spoil.
