I took our goofy dog for a walk this afternoon and it crossed my mind that she could be a manifestation of a creature from another dimension. In science fiction (and some theoretical physics) there’s the concept of many worlds that overlap. The Adventures of Buckaroo Banzai Across the 8th Dimension and Sliders are examples. Her sense of smell is way more refined than any human’s. Two little patches of grass and weeds that seem indistinguishable to me are worlds apart to her. One interests her not in the least, the other is filled with information. A female squirrel was here very recently. That grey dog from down the block peed here two days ago.
Finally got around to mowing the lawn now that it’s dried out a bit. We’re starting up on end-of-season harvesting before a killing frost hits — it got down to 37°F/3°C last night. My wife harvested most of our Honeycrisp apples today. Some will be eaten as is, some made into applesauce and canned, and at least one apple pie is in the offing. Maybe a dozen “Sugar Pie” pumpkins yet to be harvested and processed, we’ll probably freeze some rather than make lots of pies and pumpkin bread all at once.
I harvested maybe a third of our (Cascade) hops today, they’re in the dehydrator right now. They’ll be put in Mylar bags with oxygen absorbers and then into the chest freezer for whenever I get my act together to homebrew a batch of beer. The hops had been in a different location for several years and we transplanted them when they were threatened by construction the neighbors were doing. I had no idea if hops could be transplanted but they did just fine this season in their new location.
