Here's the secret pathway from the fields at the back of the house (about a mile away). It leads on to the avenue and is often awash with dog walkers. Sometimes there's a little flurry and a queue to get through.
It was a beautiful late summer's morning, sunny, warm, sleepy. Not many people around. I'd woken about six, finally back to normal hours - sleeping at night and awake in the day. It was the longest walk I had done since coming home.
Finally got inside the new tropical glasshouse, first time I've been in the Garden when it's been open. It reminded me that I wanted some kind of room with plants, and inside outside room. If I was on the computer I would have straightened this.
The gate to the allotment left unlocked again. So tempting. If it had been earlier I would have gone through. Not that there is much to see:
They were talking about the beneficial effects of spices on the Zoe podcast. Some interesting scientific research about health elements of the polyphenols in spices. Two large scale studies showing benefits, although in one they used a blend of nine spices and herbs, so no idea which is doing what.
However, generally agreed that they are not doing harm, and may be doing good, so keep doing what you are doing. Interesting that spices become activated/more potent in the presence of fat and heat.
Top five gateway spices:
- turmeric (no surprises)
- black pepper with your turmeric (helps access some of the compounds).
- cinnamon (best from Sri Lanka).
- sumac.
- ginger.
Turmeric and ginger are anti-inflammatory; cinnamon helps to regulate blood pressure. Sumac generally a good egg. Can sprinkle it on food like a condiment. Has a slightly bitter dried berry taste.
