The musical instrument that needed a little help is a telecaster type electric guitar from my friend Hive account@cesaramos

💠 Saludos cordiales, mis queridos Hivers, en esta oportunidad quiero compartir con ustedes un hobby que siempre he tenido y es el mantenimiento y restauración de instrumentos musicales, una actividad que disfruto muchísimo hacer y que ayuda a desconectarme del caos rutinario.

El instrumento musical que necesitó un poco de ayuda es una guitarra eléctrica tipo telecaster de mi amigo Hive account@cesaramos

At first glance it was possible to notice the lack of maintenance and the consequences of not receiving it in a timely manner, so I began to disassemble the parts for a deeper check. Remove the strings, lower the bridge, remove the microphone and of course evaluate the state of the electronic circuit.

A primera vista se pudo notar la falta de mantenimiento y las consecuencias de no recibirlo oportunamente, así que empece a desmontar las partes para un chequeo mas profundo. Retirar las cuerdas, bajar el puente, retirar los micrófono y por supuesto evaluar el estado del circuito electronico.

After taking everything apart, I noticed that there was wear on the frets. There are several processes to fix this problem depending on the level of wear, for this case I decided to perform a rectification at two steps: I did the first place with a completely flat knife grinding stone to correct the heights of the frets without unevenness and correct the grooves produced by the use of rusty ropes. The second step would be to polish each fret with a soapy wire sponge, the kind used for household jobs.
Note: To uniformly rectify the frets it is necessary to verify that the neck is not bent.

Después de desmontar todo, note que había desgaste en los trastes. Existen varios procesos para arreglar este problema dependiendo del nivel de desgaste, para este caso decidí realizar una rectificación a dos pasos: El primero lo realice con una piedra de amolar cuchillos completamente plana para corregir sin desnivelar las alturas de los trastes y corregir los surcos producidos por el uso de cuerdas oxidadas. El segundo paso seria pulir cada traste con una esponja de alambre jabonosa, de las que se usan para trabajos domésticos.
Nota: Para rectificar uniformemente los traste es necesario verificar que el mástil no este encorvado.

I washed the body with liquid soap to remove all the dirt, then it was time to moisturize the neck with lemon oil. Next I applied vehicle polish to give the paint a shine and rejuvenation.

Lavé el cuerpo con jabón liquido para retirar toda la suciedad, luego tocó hidratar el mástil con aceite de limón. A continuación apliqué pulitura para vehículos y darle un brillo y rejuvenecimiento a la pintura.

I got to work on the electronics while the polish dried. One of the potentiometers was damaged and required replacement; I removed all the old cables and replaced them with shielded cables, then looked on the board of an old computer power supply for a tone capacitor since the guitar didn't have one.

Puse manos a las obras repecto a la electronica mientras la pulitura secaba. Uno de los potenciometros estaba dañado y requirio reemplazo; retiré todos cables viejos y los reemplace por cables apantallados, luego busqué en la tarjeta de una vieja fuente de poder de computadoras un capacitador para el tono ya que la guitarra no tenia uno.

Now comes the final assembly and adjustment. The strings on an electric guitar are mostly made of steel and nickel. These metals are very strong and have a very high plastic deformity factor, so they are very resistant to fatigue. Despite the fact that many insist on replacing the strings (and it is ideal), used strings can be given a second chance if they are given a "cleaning" and polishing that allows them to vibrate without elements that interfere with their dynamics. how is rust I subject guitar strings to various treatments, the first is letting them soak in a solution of water, salt, liquid soap and caustic soda to remove all dirt, especially that which accumulates between the coils of the strings. Then I pass them through three different sandpapers to remove the rust and polish them. It worked for me and I have successfully recovered many old strings 😊.

Ahora viene el ensamblado y ajuste final. Las cuerdas de una guitarra eléctrica son en su mayoría de acero y níquel. Estos metales son muy fuertes y con muy alto factor de deformidad plástica, de manera que son muy resistentes a la fatiga. A pesar de que muchos insisten en el reemplazo de las cuerdas (y es lo ideal), a las cuerdas usadas se les puede dar una segunda oportunidad si se les realiza una "limpieza" y pulido que le permita vibrar sin elementos que estorben su dinámica como es el oxido. Yo someto las cuerdas de guitarra a varios tratamientos, el primero es dejándolas remojar en una solución de agua, sal, jabón líquido y soda caustica para remover toda suciedad, en especial la que se acumula entre las espiras de los bordones. Luego las paso por tres diferentes lijas para retirar el oxido y pulirlas. A mi me a funcionado y he recuperado satisfactoriamente muchas cuerdas viejas 😊.

Once the strings are placed, all that remains is to calibrate and "Quintar" which is a technical procedure in which the strings are adjusted so that the notes are precise at each fret, moving the elements that make up the bridge, such as the "skates" allowing to lengthen or reduce the size of the strings; this distance affects the correct position of the tones on the corresponding fret.
Finally, shine with a soft cloth, polish the screws with very fine sandpaper and of course test the sound 🎸.

Una vez colocadas las cuerdas solo resta calibrar y "Quintar" que es un procedimiento técnico en el que se ajustan las cuerdas de manera que las notas sean precisas en cada traste, moviendo los elementos que conforman el puente, como los "patines" permitiendo alargar o reducir el tamaño de las cuerdas; esta distancia incide en la posición correcta de los tonos en el traste correspondiente.
Finalmente, dar brillo con un paño suave, pulir los tornillos con una lija muy fina y por supuesto probar el sonido 🎸.
