Weirdly enough.. one of the things that I hate the most about being a musician is the travelling and being away from home. I love playing and performing... but I just hate being away from family and a familiar bed.
When we lived in Europe, it was lots of these long trips across Europe and around the world to do what we do... but since returning back to Australia, it is much less common for me to do an international project. There is more than enough in Australia and the place is already pretty damn big, so even travelling with the country is a bit more than travelling across Europe!
But for some reason, this year I have begun to get offers of work in Asia (and a few more asking if I would come to Europe...)... which is nice, but it means that those longer trips are starting begin again...
... and with it, the sadness that comes with leaving family and home. Strangely... it isn't the time, I am away for longer periods in domestic projects... but the idea of going to a different country (passing through customs and immigration) sort of makes it hit harder. The idea that I can't get back quickly or easily compared to being within the country.
I know my wife doesn't believe me... but every time the plane takes off, I get a bit teary and already want to be home.
... one nice thing is the larger baggage allowance compared to domestic flights. It means that I can take the larger checked baggage and be really careless about packing... no cramming everything into every last little space!
... meanwhile, I had forgotten how strange these international airports were. Busy and full of activity... and weird cross between transit hub and overpriced shopping mall. I'm going to find a nice quiet corner somewhere to wait out the time before my flight boards...
