Two days ago an almost historic event has happened. An important event for the whole world of EDM (Electronic Dance Music), and disco music. Unfortunately, after 28 years of career, the legendary duo Daft Punk has split up.
Daft Punk fue un grupo sumamente importante para muchas personas, al traer géneros de décadas anteriores a lo mainstream, y combinarlo con sonidos actuales para crear una re-versión de algo que ya habíamos escuchado.
La labor del crítico es dar su opinión fundamentada de cualquier tipo de contenido que consuma, ya sea dándolo a conocer o añadiendo más a la discusión que se ha formado, y como crítico me veía en necesidad de hablar de un grupo que ha marcado mi vida, con un disco que ha marcado a la música: Random Access Memories.
Daft Punk was an extremely important group for many people, bringing genres from previous decades to the mainstream, and combining it with current sounds to create a re-version of something we had already heard.
The critic's job is to give an informed opinion of any kind of content he/she consumes, either by making it known or adding to the discussion that has been formed already, and as a critic I felt the need to talk about a group that has marked my life, with an album that has marked music: Random Access Memories.
Random Access Memories abre con Give Life Back to Music, y desde el primer momento podemos notar la maestría que tiene esta banda para superponer pistas, haciendo que la canción nunca se sienta aburrida; en cada momento hay un cambio, un solo, y demás elementos que le dan dinamismo al track. Esta canción se puede considerar una oda a la música disco, dándole vida una vez más. Además de esto, se combina con una guitara bastante funk.

Random Access Memories opens with Give Life Back to Music, and from the first moment we can notice the mastery that this band has to superimpose tracks, making the song never feel boring; at every moment there is a change, a solo, and other elements that give dynamism to the track. This song can be considered an ode to disco music, giving it life once again. Adding more to that, it combines a pretty funk guitar.

Esta canción ya nos decía que este álbum sería distinto a los anteriores de la discografía de Daft Punk; luego de haberse vuelto famosos con su disco Discovery, donde predominaba el género House, cambian radicalmente pasando a la música Disco, y este álbum, por sobre muchas cosas, es una oda al pasado. Lo primero que escuchamos es cómo este género vuelve a la vida.
This song already told us that this album would be different from the previous ones in Daft Punk's discography; after having become famous with their album Discovery, where the House genre predominated, they radically change to Disco music, and this album, above many things, is an ode to the past. The first thing we hear is how this genre comes back to life.
Luego de esa mítica introducción al disco, toca The Game of Love, una canción Dance, llevada casi como una balada. Esta plantea un tema a veces recurrente en la música de este dúo francés, y es el desamor y el despecho. La banda siempre lo trata de una forma única con esas voces robóticas tan características; el autotune es usado como un elemento creativo para dar paso a la problemática de un robot con sentimientos. Y es que, algo que hace a este grupo tan interesante es cómo dos robots buscaban sonar como humanos.
La canción es mayormente dirigida por un patrón ritmico sonando en la batería. Esto es acompañado por una guitarra y por sintetizadores. La batería suena sumamente orgánica, sumando más a este concepto de combinar lo humano y lo digital.
After this mythical introduction to the album, The Game of Love, a Dance song, is played. It raises a theme that is sometimes recurrent in the music of this French duo, and that is heartbreak and heartbreak. The band always treats it in a unique way with those characteristic robotic voices; the autotune is used as a creative element to give way to the problems of a robot with feelings. And that's because, something that makes this band so interesting is how two robots sought to sound human.
The song is mostly driven by a rhythmic pattern playing on the drums. This is accompanied by a guitar and synthesizers. The drums sound extremely organic, adding more to this concept of combining the human and the digital.

This song lasts nine minutes, and is a complete journey through the same riff, and how Daft Punk is able to fill it with waves and waves of instrumentation to create an entire song based on that idea.
Within es de las mejores canciones de todo el disco, y es precisamente por llevar al límite el concepto del álbum.

Within is one of the best songs on the entire record, and it is precisely because it pushes the concept of the album to the limit.
The song is carried only by a drum kit, a piano and a synthesizer, creating a lonely and spacious aura.
But, the most interesting thing is the theme of the song, which has two possible interpretations: A love dependency to fill an existential void, or a machine with emotions begging for someone who can explain to it who or what it is.
This song gives me chills.
Llegamos a una de las canciones más famosas de Daft Punk en general, y esta es Instant Crush, una curiosa colaboración con Julian Casablancas (cantante de The Strokes). Esta es una canción Synthpop, y no hay nada que pueda decir de esta pista que no se haya sido dicho antes.
Es un track bastante triste, pero también bastante enérgico y bailable, causando una disonancia entre su contenido lírico y su contenido musical. Además de tener líneas sumamente emblemáticas como:

We come to one of Daft Punk's most famous songs in general, and this is Instant Crush, a curious collaboration with Julian Casablancas (lead singer of The Strokes). This is a Synthpop song, and there's nothing I can say about this track that hasn't been said before.
It's quite a sad track, but also quite energetic and danceable, causing a dissonance between its lyrical content and its musical content. Besides having extremely emblematic lines such as:
And we will never be alone again
'Cause it doesn't happen every day
Kinda counted on you being a friend
Can I give it up or give it away?
Simply a great song, which will be remembered as one of the best songs in Daft Punk's entire discography.
Seguimos con los exitos de la banda, y en este caso es Lose Yourself to Dance, en colaboración con Pharrell Williams.
Este track tiene, como todo el álbum, una gran producción, y en este caso se aprovechan de eso para remarcar el tema de esta canción: perderse en el baile.
Esta canción no tiene letras profundas, o dobles sentidos; solo quiere ponerte a bailar. C'mon.
We continue with the band's hits, and in this case it is Lose Yourself to Dance, in collaboration with Pharrell Williams. This track has, as the whole album, a great production, and in this case they take advantage of that to emphasize the theme of this song: lose yourself to dance. This song has no deep lyrics, or double entendres; it just wants to get you dancing. C'mon.
Touch es una montaña rusa de diversos géneros, pasando por un segmento de raros sintetizadores, para luego pasar al disco una vez más, y tener un segmento orquestal hermoso, donde se repite la frase: «Hold on, if love is the answer, you're home», un segmento que pone la piel de gallina, y puede aguarle los ojos a muchos.
Esta canción parece continuar con lo que Within ya había empezado, esta vez jugando con el concepto de la soledad, y si el contacto humano es necesario para sentirnos completos.

Touch is a roller coaster of different genres, going through a segment of weird synthesizers, and then moving into disco once again, and having a beautiful orchestral segment, where the phrase: "Hold on, if love is the answer, you're home " is repeated, a segment that gives goosebumps, and can make many people's eyes water.
This song seems to continue what Within had already started, this time playing with the concept of loneliness, and if human contact is necessary to feel complete.

This album proposes a problem, and it is: what would happen if a robot were as human as you, or as human as me?
Get Lucky es una canción disco funky que nos levanta de ese hoyo al que nos metió el track anterior, y nos pone a bailar. Al fin y al cabo ese es uno de los puntos del género Disco: bailar.
Simplemente a mover las caderas unos minutos.
Get Lucky is a funky disco song that lifts us out of the hole the previous track put us in, and gets us dancing. After all, that is one of the points of the Disco genre: to dance.
Just move your hips for a few minutes.
Mientras esa canción disco se va desvaneciendo, de la nada entra una instrumentación orquestral épica, anunciando el inicio de Beyond, y el mensaje de la pista no podría pedir menos.
Además de tratar temas recurrentes en este disco, este track mayormente habla de ir más allá de la vida, de tus sueños, superar todo esto y llegar a un punto etéreo de existencia. Exactamente como las máquinas.
Esta canción tiene una guitarra bastante funky, y la batería la acompaña en esa sensación. Una canción increíble.
As that disco song fades out, out of nowhere an epic orchestral instrumentation enters, heralding the start of Beyond, and the message of the track couldn't ask for less.
Besides dealing with recurring themes in this album, this track mostly talks about going beyond life, beyond your dreams, overcoming all this and reaching an ethereal point of existence. Exactly like the machines.
This song has a pretty funky guitar, and the drums accompany it in that feeling. Such an amazing track.
Motherboard es una canción completamente instrumental en donde son combinados tanto instrumentos digitales como instrumentos orgánicos. A pesar de esto ser algo recurrente en el disco, toma un nuevo significado con el nombre de la canción: "Tarjeta madre", una parte de la computadora donde coexisten todas sus partes más esenciales.
Pareciera que busca darnos un mensaje de mancomunidad, unión, y uso entre todos para crear algo mucho más grande.
Además de esto, la canción es mayormente dirigida por un riff en un sintetizador, y se llena con olas de violines y chellos ocasionales.
Al final hay un efecto de sonido parecido al del agua cayendo, y la canción termina.
Naturaleza y tecnología juntas, en una canción.
Motherboard is a completely instrumental song where both digital and organic instruments are combined. Although this is something recurrent in the album, it takes on a new meaning with the name of the song: "Motherboard", a part of the computer where all its most essential parts coexist.
It seems that it seeks to give us a message of commonality, union, and use among all to create something much bigger.
Besides this, the song is mostly driven by a riff on a synthesizer, and is filled with waves of violins and occasional cellos.
At the end there is a sound effect similar to falling water, and the song ends.
Nature and technology together, in one song.
Luego de esta obra de arte, viene Fragments of Time, una canción bastante alegre de Disco Funk, que trata de crear recuerdos que después en tu vida brillarán cuando te pares a pensar en ellos.
La voz de Todd Edwards en esta canción se vuelve muy característica, porque logra transmitir una felicidad y ganas de bailar incontrolables.
Considero a este track una de mis canciones confort, y es porque sabe como ponerme en marcha rápidamente.
After this work of art, comes Fragments of Time, a rather cheerful Disco Funk song, which tries to create memories that later in your life will shine when you stop to think about them.
Todd Edwards' voice in this song becomes very characteristic, because it manages to transmit an uncontrollable happiness and desire to dance.
I consider this track one of my comfort songs, and it's because it knows how to get me going quickly.
A pesar de parecer sencilla, Doin' It Right es una canción que cumple con su propósito sorprendentemente bien, y es alegrarte. Tiene una producción bastante elegante con esa pista simple de un bombo y un hi hat, y considero esto lo mejor, ya que así se siente inesperada la siguiente canción. Una de las obras maestras de Daft Punk: Contact.
Despite sounding simple, Doin' It Right is a song that serves its purpose surprisingly well, and that is to cheer you up. It has a pretty slick production with that simple track of a kick drum and hi hat, and I consider this the best thing about it, as it makes the next song feel unexpected. One of Daft Punk's masterpieces: Contact.
Empezando por un sample sacado de una grabación del Apollo 17, esta canción trata acerca del espacio, y de un objeto sin identificar en el mismo.
Un riff de sintetizador lleva la mayor parte de la canción, junto con lo que es fácilmente la mejor batería del disco.
Yo interpreto esta canción como Daft Punk tocando en el espacio, llenando el silencio sepulcral que se encuentra allá arriba (a pesar de que físicamente es imposible), y conforme esta canción va en crescendo, también su llegada en la tierra se denota con un ruido que va incrementando a lo largo de la canción hasta ser solo ruido por unos momentos.
Están atravesando la estratosfera.
Siguen cayendo.
Finalmente: Daft Punk ha llegado a la tierra.
Starting with a sample taken from an Apollo 17 recording, this song is about space, and an unidentified object in it.
A synth riff carries most of the song, along with what is easily the best drumming on the album.
I interpret this song as Daft Punk playing in space, filling the sepulchral silence up there (even though it's physically impossible), and as this song crescendos, also their arrival on earth is denoted by a noise that increases throughout the song until it's just noise for a few moments.
They are crossing the stratosphere.
They keep falling.
Finally: Daft Punk has arrived on earth.
Este álbum trata un concepto que me deja fascinado, y es la máquina como humano. Una idea, que a pesar de vaga, puede llegar a concretarse de formas magnificas, como este álbum.
En una época donde abundaban artistas que querían sonar como robots, llegó Daft Punk: Dos robots que querían ser humanos.
Y eso, es sencillamente fantástico.
This album deals with a concept that fascinates me, and that is the machine as a human. An idea that, despite being vague, can come to fruition in magnificent ways, like this album.
At a time when there were many artists who wanted to sound like robots, Daft Punk came along: two robots who wanted to be human.
And that, is simply fantastic.
