When we refer to the 90's, we are undoubtedly talking about the golden age of unconventional and mainstream music. They were 10 years in which the great historical bands, although they produced albums and great songs, shone from the big charts and gave way to those who, historically, were behind the scenes. This is how the years of alternative music, Brit pop and, of course, grunge began, passed and were lived. However, I have spoken about the latter several times. Today the focus is on UK music and its mark on culture.
"Music is the closest thing we have to a time machine", this sentence is a comment on YouTube. How do I know this? Well, while searching and putting together a playlist for this post, I came across this quote and I simply couldn't not put it in these lines. There is so much truth in so little space. That's the number one reason why I write in these communities of music, culture and passions. Because, although I have certain melancholic tendencies, I like to remember the eras for what they were: beautiful and above all, unique times.
Cuando nos referimos a los años 90's, indudablemente estamos hablando de la época dorada de la música nada convencional ni mainstream. Fueron 10 años donde las grandes bandas históricas, si bien produjeron álbumes y temazos, brillaron de las grandes carteleras y dieron paso a aquellos que, históricamente, estuvieron detrás de bastidores. Así arranca, transcurren y se viven los años de la música alternativa; del brit pop, y por supuesto, de grunge. No obstante, de este último he hablado repetidas veces. Hoy la atención se centra sobre la música del Reino Unido y su huella en la cultura.
"Music is the closest thing we have to a time machine.", esta oración está como comentario dentro de YouTube ¿Cómo lo sé? Pues, buscando y armando un playlist para este post, me topé con esa cita y sencillamente no podía no colocarla en estas líneas. Hay demasiada verdad en tan poco espacio. Esa es la razón número uno por la cual yo escribo en estas comunidades de música, cultura y pasiones. Porque, aunque tengo ciertas tendencias melancólicas, me gusta recordar las épocas como lo que fueron: tiempos hermosos y sobre todo, únicos.
The same goes for the 90's. As I said at the beginning of the post, these are the ten years dedicated to breaking all possible stereotypes. We went from the glamour, the "sex, drugs and rock and roll" typical of the 89's to the introspective, cynical, brilliantly intellectual and existential side of life. Those elements are what we can see within many songs of the era. Whether it's The Cure, or The Smiths. The important thing is that it is the very spirit of an era, the "Zeitgeist" as it is known in German. And if you ask me, it even affected our way of seeing things and changed society a little bit.
Now, I'm more than convinced that many of the people who are within this #Music community in HIVE, count as more than three decades within this existential terrain, therefore, in one way or another they know the impact that Brit Pop had on the way we conceive this wave of culture and musical style. That is to say, how a group of guys from the UK began to pay more attention to what they felt inside themselves and transferred it to the outside world with excellent skill.
Esto mismo sucede con los 90's. Como dije al inicio del post, son los diez años dedicados a romper todos los estereotipos posibles. Pasamos del glamour, del "sexo, drogas y rock and roll" típico de los 89's hacia el lado introspectivo, cínico, brillantemente intelectual y existencial de la vida. Esos elementos son los que podemos ver dentro de muchas canciones de la época. Bien sea de The Cure, o The Smiths. Lo importante, es que es el mero espíritu de una época, el "Zeitgeist" como se le conoce en alemán. Y que si me preguntan a mí, incluso en cierto modo afectó nuestra manera de ver las cosas y cambió un poco la sociedad.
Ahora bien, estoy más que convencido que muchas de las personas que están dentro de esta comunidad de #Music en HIVE, cuentan como más de tres décadas dentro de este terreno existencial, por tanto, de una u otra forma conocen el impacto que tuvo el Brit Pop en la manera en cómo concebimos esta ola de cultural y estilo musical. Es decir, como desde el Reino Unido un grupo de chicos, empezaron a prestarle más atención a lo que sentían dentro de sí mismos y lo trasladaron hacia el exterior con excelsa habilidad.
This is the case, to give just one brief example, with Blur. For me, the most iconic band of this whole movement along with Oasis. Both bands even had a marked confrontation. Something that I didn't understand very well, because from my perspective there were more similarities between them than differences that kept them apart... But that's another story. Here I concentrate on recognising the strength and majesty of the music they bequeathed to us. In fact, it is so palpable that established bands like Arctic Monkeys, The Killers or Gorillaz, who belong entirely to the 2000's, would never have existed without them...
And part of the importance of this generational movement lies in the fact that it is a direct response to the existentialism with toxic but beautiful tints that came from the United States with grunge. Besides, the English have always been a proud, talented people who have written several pages in the rich history of contemporary music; not to mention rock and pop... (No one will ever be bigger than The Beatles, just to give a brief glimpse...).
Este es el caso, por sólo dar un breve ejemplo de Blur. Para mí, la banda más icónica de todo este movimiento junto a Oasis. Incluso, ambas bandas tuvieron un marcado enfrentamiento. Algo que no entendí muy bien, porque desde mi perspectiva eran más similitudes que tenían que las diferencias que les alejaba... Pero ésa es otra historia. Aquí me concentro en reconocer la fuerza y la majestuosidad de la música que nos legaron. Incluso, es tan palpable que bandas consagradas como Arctic Monkeys, The Killers o Gorillaz, que pertenecen enteramente a la década del 2000's jamás habrían existido sin ellos...
Y es que parte de la importancia de este movimiento generacional radica como respuesta directa al existencialismo con tintes tóxicos pero hermosos que provenía desde Estados Unidos con el grunge. Además, los ingleses siempre han sido un pueblo orgulloso, talentoso y que han escrito varias páginas dentro de la historia riquísima de la música contemporánea; y ni hablar del rock o del pop... (Nadie será más grande que Los Beatles, por sólo dar una brevísima pasada...)
In this sense, bands like Joy Division, The Verve, Travis or Snow Patrol are just a glimpse of the range of samples we can observe within the genre. Those who have read me in the past will know the unconditional love I have and will continue to have for Radiohead. Which for me is the Alpha and Omega of what England has produced in generations.... However, much of the music I explore here is directly driven by the influence of the emotions we are all capable of feeling: insecurity, jealousy, envy, rage and even spoilt brattishness are some of the triggers you will notice within the chords that have given life to the most iconic tracks of this movement.
In fact, throughout this post I will leave several songs that, most probably, will provoke goosebumps in those who stop and listen to them. Am I too arrogant in assuring something that I won't be able to prove? I don't think so. I just trust in the unquestionable power of music, and Brit pop, like much alternative music, has a power that has often gone too unnoticed. Interestingly, today, and yes, I am talking about 2023, there has been a boom in both synthwave and post punk, two genres that are as different as they are distant but have one thing in common: they are introspective.
En este sentido, bandas como Joy Division, The Verve, Travis o Snow Patrol son tan solo un atisbo del alcance de muestras que podemos observar dentro del género. Quienes me han leído en el pasado, sabrán del amor incondicional que guardo y seguiré guardando por Radiohead. Que para mí es el Alfa y el Omega de lo que Inglaterra ha producido en generaciones... No obstante, mucha de la música que aquí explico está directamente movida por la influencia de las emociones que todos somos capaces de sentir: inseguridad, celos, envidia, rabia y hasta malcriadez, son algunos de los disparadores que notaremos dentro de los acordes que han dado vida a los temas más icónicos de esta movida.
De hecho, a lo largo y ancho del post dejaré varias canciones que, muy probablemente, provocarán la piel de gallina en quienes se detengan y las escuchen ¿Soy demasiado prepotente en asegurar algo que no podré comprobar? No lo creo. Tan solo confío en el poder incuestionable que tiene la música, y el brit pop, así como mucha de la música alternativa, posee una fuerza que muchas veces ha pasado demasiado inadvertida. Curiosamente, en la actualidad, y sí, hablo del 2023, ha habido un auge tanto del synthwave como del post punk, dos géneros tan distintos como lejanos pero que guardan algo en común: son introspectivos.
This is how the preponderance of emotions in music and being take the "steering wheel" and no matter what era you are in, there will always be a song (perhaps born in the 90's, during this era of musical power) that moves you today, takes hold of you and that you can't explain too well. Even, and here I speak anecdotally, I have a great friend who I think is very much caught up in that historical moment in music. He's an inveterate lover of alternative and Brit Pop, who knows? Maybe thinking about him has inspired these lines. I don't even know...
Finally, can music transport us, like a time machine, to times, places and eras we love more than anything else in life? I am convinced it can. This is proof that it can. And I hope that those who stop at this little window will feel it. At the end of the road, that's what it's all about: feeling, experiencing and transmitting what music provokes in each of us. I was once a child who couldn't stop consuming music and marvelling. Today, I am an adult who describes that little boy and connects with what is left of him.
Es así como la preponderancia que tienen las emociones dentro de la música y del ser toman el "volante" y da igual en cuál época te encuentres, siempre habrá un tema (que quizá haya nacido en los 90's, durante esta época de poderío musical) que hoy te conmueva, se apodere de ti y que no puedas explicar demasiado bien. Incluso, y aquí hablo desde lo anecdótico, tengo a un gran amigo que creo que está muy atrapado en ese momento histórico de la música. Es un empedernido amante de lo alternativo y lo Brit Pop ¿Quién sabe? Quizás el haber pensado en él haya inspirado estas líneas. Ni yo lo sé...
Finalmente, ¿puede la música transportarnos, como lo haría una máquina del tiempo hacia momentos, lugares y épocas que amamos más que a nada en la vida? Estoy convencido de que sí. Esta es la prueba de que es así. Y espero que quienes se detengan en esta pequeña ventana así lo sientan. Al final del camino de eso se trata de sentir, experimentar y transmitir lo que la música nos provoca a cada de nosotros. Una vez fui un niño que no paraba de consumir música y maravillarme. Hoy, soy un adulto que describe a ese pequeñín y que se conecta con lo que queda de él.
