Let's start with the first thing, shall we? Let's see, what is "Grunge"? First of all, it's a definition of a record label, which curiously, with the inevitable passage of time, has become legendary. And yes, I'm talking about Sub-Pop Records. The same label that supported and brought out of hiding the famous Big Five from Seattle, Washington, USA (Alice in Chains, Nirvana, Soundgarden, Pearl Jam and Green River). So, since in the late 80's there was no name to classify the alternative sound that was listened to by the young people of the time, the record label called them "Grunge". It was a catchphrase, which served to pigeonhole them and to promote the albums they produced. This is the birth of a musical movement that changed the world forever.
Empecemos con lo primero, ¿sí? A ver, ¿qué es "Grunge"? En primer lugar, es una definición de una disquera, que curiosamente, con el paso inevitable del tiempo, ha llegado a ser legendaria. Y sí, me refiero a Sub-Pop Records. La misma que apoyó y sacó de la clandestinidad al famoso Big Five de Seattle, Washington, USA (Alice in Chains, Nirvana, Soundgarden, Pearl Jam y Green River). Entonces, como a finales de los 80's no había una denominación para clasificar el sonido alternativo que era escuchado por los jóvenes de la época, la disquera los denominó de este modo: "Grunge". Un golpe de voz, que servía para encasillarlos y poder promocionar los álbumes que eran producidos por ellos. Este es el nacimiento de un movimiento musical que cambió el mundo para siempre.
Now, why do I say that it "changed the world forever"? Well, because the trend at that time was Glam Metal, or Hair Metal. That is to say, bands that fused the Glam aesthetic with a kind of Hard Rock that was a bit more pop. Motley Crue, Poison, Skid Row, and other bands were the norm, not the exception. If you notice, the peak of these rock bands' rise, performance and popularity was just before the entrance of Grunge. In this sense, what was known on the Pacific West Coast in the United States as "music for college kids" suddenly took over every single one of the world's music charts. But I'm getting too far ahead of myself...
To understand the phenomenon properly, it is necessary to apply the melancholic and cynical context of the time. Fundamental to fully understand how a local movement could dominate mainstream charts such as Billboard or Rolling Stone magazine, win Grammys and give MTV a second life, as had not happened since its creation and popularisation in the 80s. During Ronald Reagan's administration, the common spirit of American society was extremely consumerist. The goal instilled by absolutely all components of that country were bent on achieving exacerbated materialistic and selfish success.
Ahora bien. ¿por qué digo que "cambió el mundo para siempre"? Pues. porque la tendencia de esa época era el Glam Metal, o el Hair Metal. Es decir, bandas que fusionaban la estética Glam con una especie de Hard Rock algo más pop. Motley Crue, Poison, Skid Row, y otras bandas eran la norma, no la excepción. Si se fijan, el pico de auge, rendimiento y popularidad de estos grupos de rock fue justo antes de la entrada del Grunge. En este sentido, lo que en la costa oeste del Pacífico, en Estados Unidos, era conocido como "música para universitarios", de repente se apoderó de todas y cada una de las listas mundiales de la música. Pero me estoy adelantando demasiado...
Para entender bien el fenómeno, es necesario aplicar el contexto melancólico y cínico de la época. Fundamental para entender completamente cómo un movimiento local, pudo dominar carteleras tan mainstream como "Billboard" o la de la revista Rolling Stone, ganar Grammys y darle una segunda vida a la MTV, como no pasaba desde su creación y popularización en los 80's. Durante el gobierno de Ronald Reagan, el espíritu común de la sociedad estadounidense era extremadamente consumista. El objetivo inculcado por absolutamente todos los componentes de ese país estaban inclinados a alcanzar un éxito materialista exacerbado y egoísta.
As you well know, nothing can be absolute or perfectly balanced. Therefore, those who did become representatives of financial, material and well-positioned success saw those who did not achieve it as a kind of "clowns". A "loser" subspecies, who did not deserve respect, consideration or any kind of attention. It was under this social atmosphere that music, culture and above all, the artistic response to the absurdity of capitalist competition, resulted in Grunge. Young people who were fed up with what they saw in their time, decided to reinvent the socially accepted standards of their historical moment.
Como bien saben, nada puede ser absoluto ni perfectamente equilibrado. Por tanto, quienes sí llegaron a ser representantes del éxito financiero, material y estaban bien posicionados, veían a aquellos que no lo lograban como una especie de "payasos". Una subespecie "loser", que no merecía respeto, consideración ni ningún tipo de atención. Bajo esta atmósfera social, fue que la música, la cultura y sobre todo, la respuesta artística ante el absurdo de la competencia capitalista, dio como resultado al Grunge. Muchachos que hartos de lo que veían en su época, decidieron reinventar los estamentos socialmente aceptados de su momento histórico.
Suddenly, the songs were no longer about how many girls they had been able to get into bed, but about the misery they saw in their homes as children. About physical abuse, verbal abuse and the absurdity of living. In other words, they applied a nihilistic definition to everything they created from the point of view of the arts. Hence the "look" or "fashion", which ironically also ended up being mainstream. A costume that recalled the humble place where all the most important representatives of Grunge used to come from. The truth is that this feeling of dissatisfaction and, above all, fed up with the arbitrary impositions that society expected of them, gave rise to the anger, pain, rage, revenge and, above all, the darkness of the lyrics and music of this subgenre.
Nirvana was at the time, and is currently, the flagship of this genre. They were the ones who started (without ever wanting to) the "alternative" to Grunge. "Nevermind", their second studio album, was a bomb at the time. No one had ever produced an album with such a powerful charge of anger, disappointment, cynicism so openly marked and, above all, that spoke directly to a generation that was not getting a response from any other comparable musical exponent. "Smells Like Teen Spirit was a multi-platinum hit, no doubt, but it was also a crowd-pleasing anthem; a manifesto to the counterculture, to those who took pride in not being "Yuppies" or ruthless assholes.
De repente, ya las canciones no eran más sobre cuántas chicas había podido llevar a la cama, sino sobre la miseria que ellos veían en sus hogares mientras eran niños. Sobre el abuso físico, verbal y sobre el absurdo de vivir. Es decir, aplicaron una definición nihilista a todo lo que crearon desde el punto de vista de las artes. De allí el "look" o "moda", que irónicamente terminó siendo también mainstream. Ropaje que recordaba el lugar humilde de donde todos los representantes más importantes del Grunge solían ser. Lo cierto, es que este sentimiento de insatisfacción y sobre todo hartazgo ante las imposiciones arbitrarias que la sociedad esperaba de ellos, dio inicio a la ira, el dolor, la rabia, la venganza y sobre todo la oscuridad de las letras y la música de este subgénero.
Nirvana fue en su momento, y es actualmente, la bandera de este género. Fueron quienes arrancaron (sin jamás quererlo) lo "alternativo" al Grunge. "Nevermind", su segundo álbum de estudio fue una bomba en su momento. Jamás nadie había producido un disco con una carga tan poderosa de ira, decepción, cinismo tan abiertamente marcado y sobre todo, que le hablaba directamente a una generación que no obtenía respuesta de ningún otro exponente musical comparable. "Smells Like Teen Spirit" fue un éxito multiplatino, no hay duda, pero también fue un himno de multitudes; un manifiesto a la contracultura, a aquellos que sentían orgullo por no ser "Yuppies" ni imbéciles despiadados.
The Cobain-led band were not alone, nor were they the only exponents of the massive movement that had inspired and changed the lives of millions. Alice in Chains, along with The Melvins and Mother Love Bone, is in my view the foundation of Grunge. Because all the distinctive sounds of this way of understanding and making rock are in those bands. Of course, this is not limiting, Pearl Jam, Soundgarden, L7, Sonic Youth and The Pixies have several pages written in the brief but immortal history of Grunge. It is difficult to find another period in the history of music, where all the exponents of a movement, have been absolutely good and complementary.
It was impossible not to constantly feed back. That is to say, you started listening to Nirvana but then ended up listening to Stone Temple Pilots, Bush or even headbanging to Silverchair. Undoubtedly, the imprint and legacy they left, to the already substantial and nourishing history of rock and roll, is impressively important. I was born in 1990, I didn't really live through the era; I simply couldn't. But their influence was so strong, that I was able to see it. But their influence was so strong that the first cassette I ever heard was Nirvana's Nevermind. The first record I ever ordered was Pearl Jam's "Ten", and I could also conclude that my first love of music came from this movement. None of the artists who made this possible, wanted (ever) what they achieved, but some things are inevitable, folks...
Los liderados por Cobain no estuvieron solo, ni fueron los únicos exponentes del masivo movimiento que había inspirado y cambiado la vida de millones de personas. Alice in Chains, es desde mi punto de vista junto a The Melvins y Mother Love Bone, los cimientos del Grunge ¿Por qué lo digo? Porque todos los sonidos distintivos de esta manera de entender y hacer rock, están en esas bandas. Por supuesto, esto que digo no es limitativo, Pearl Jam, Soundgarden, L7, Sonic Youth y The Pixies tiene varias páginas escritas en la breve pero inmortal historia del Grunge. Es difícil encontrar otra época de la historia de la música, donde todos los exponente de un movimiento, hayan sido absolutamentes buenos y complementarios.
