What band in rock and roll, since the emergence of The Beatles, has not been influenced by the Liverpool quartet: George, Paul, Ringo and John? And although this question seems a simple one to answer, the truth is that it is not, not one bit. For many reasons, but one of the most important is the fact that famous artists are highly competitive with each other. In the same way that Messi and Cristiano, although they often admire each other, never express which of the two is the best. With rock bands, it's exactly the same. Because let's be honest, they all want the spotlight pointed at them, and not necessarily at each other. It seems controversial, but it's part of the Fab Four's approach to greatness.
In this sense, and not to digress too much, The Beatles changed the world as we knew it. We went from listening to the music and pretending to accompany it on dates, wedding ceremonies, and parties, to knowing about advertising, rampant marketing, compositions, black music popularised all over the world; they revolutionised cinema with blockbuster films such as "A Hard Day's Night", "Eight Days A Week", and the very influential in alternative music; "Yellow Submarine". And with these little facts, I've come up short. Brian Epstein himself, manager of the boys from Liverpool, although he foresaw being able to increase the fame, money and above all the musical potential of the Beatles, he never imagined what we all know. The enormous fame and influence, around the world, that this band of ordinary, somewhat scruffy and ordinary boys from a port city in England, achieved, and that he could never have imagined; even for our days.
¿Cuál banda dentro del rock and roll, desde la aparición de The Beatles, no ha sido influenciada por el cuarteto de Liverpool: conformado por George, Paul, Ringo y John? Y aunque esta pregunta parece algo sencilla de contestar lo cierto es que no lo es, ni un poco. Por múltiples razones, pero una de las más importantes, es el hecho de que los artistas de fama, son altamente competitivos entre ellos. Del mismo modo, que Messi y Cristiano, aunque suelen admirarse mutuamente, jamás expresan cuál de los dos es el mejor. Con las bandas de rock, también sucede exactamente lo mismo. Porque seamos honestos, todos quieren los reflectores apuntando hacia ellos, y no necesariamente hacia los demás. Parece polémico, pero es parte de la aproximación hacia la grandeza de los "Fab Four".
En este sentido, y para no desviarnos mucho de la temática, Los Beatles cambiaron al mundo tal cual lo conocíamos. Pasamos de oír la música y pretender acompañarla en citas, ceremonias matrimoniales, y fiestas, a saber sobre publicidad, marketing desenfrenado, composiciones, música de origen negra popularizada en todo el mundo; revolucionaron el cine cintas taquilleras como "A Hard Day's Night", "Eight Days A Week", y la muy influyente dentro de la música alternativa; "Yellow Submarine". Además, con estos pequeños datos, me he quedado corto. El mismísimo Brian Epstein, mánager de los chicos de Liverpool, si bien preveía poder aumentar la fama, el dinero pero sobre todo el potencial musical de los Beatles, jamás se imaginó lo que ya todos sabemos. La descomunal fama e influencia, alrededor del mundo que esta banda de chicos ordinarios, algo desaliñados y corrientes de una ciudad portuaria de Inglaterra, logró, y que jamás pudo dimensionar; incluso para nuestros días.
Now, life is not just about magic, colour, applause, screaming madly and autograph signings, but also, within the musicians behind the greatest rock and roll band in history, (and not said by me, but by Rolling Stones magazine and Billboard) the technical and songwriting skills, also left a precedent, for many sub topics within the strictly musical. That is to say, catchy bass sequences, immortal guitar solos, accompaniments in immortal songs like "In My Life" or "'Till There Was You" (originally a song composed and performed by: Meredith Wilson) and that thanks to The Beatles, reached worldwide recognition, to such an extent that it is usually used in marriage proposals or within the setlist of songs for a wedding celebration. And as I do with these examples, I could go on for endless pages, but that's not the idea...
Controversies are never lacking. For example, a small button: "...Well, when she was just seventeen. You know what I mean... And the way she looks, was way beyond compare...". For those of us who love this band, we could never understand how such a catchy phrase, which starts one of the best bass lines I have ever heard in my life, with the fantastic Lennon-McCartney majestic composition, could at the same time be guilty of such a big controversy in the parents of that youth of the 60s in the Anglo-Saxon world. And not to mention, when John Lennon, when asked by a journalist if "The Beatles were more famous than Jesus Christ" to which the latter replied, "yes, they were", degenerated into a massive burning in bonfires within religious and fundamentalist fanatics who conveniently forgot the love for the incredible compositions made by these guys to the detriment of an extreme and irrational fanaticism for a simple phrase.
Ahora bien, la vida no es solo magia, color, aplausos, gritos enloquecidos y firmas de autógrafos, también, dentro de los músicos detrás del mejor grupo de rock and roll de la historia, (y no dicho por mi, sino por la revista Rolling Stones y Billboard) las capacidades técnicas y de composición musical, también dejaron un precedente, para muchos sub tópicos dentro de lo estrictamente musical. Es decir, secuencias de bajo pegajosas, solos de guitarra inmortales, acompañamientos en canciones inmortales como "In My Life" o "'Til There Was You" (que originalmente es un tema compuesto y hecho por: Meredith Wilson) y que gracias a The Beatles, alcanzó el reconocimiento mundial, hasta tal punto que es usualmente empleado en proposiciones de matrimonio o dentro del setlist de canciones para una celebración de bodas. Y como hago con estos ejemplos, podría continuar por incesantes páginas pero no es la idea...
Polémicas, jamás faltan. Para ejemplo, un pequeño botón: "...Well, when she was just seventeen. You know what I mean... And the way she looks, was way beyond compare..". Para quienes amamos a esta banda, jamás podríamos poder comprender cómo una frase tan pegajosa, que da inicio a una de las mejores líneas de bajo que jamás haya escuchado en mi vida, con la fantástica composición majestuosa Lennon-McCartney, al mismo tiempo fuese culpable de una polémica tan grande en los padres de aquélla juventud de los años 60 dentro del mundo anglosajón. Y no hablar, de cuando John Lennon, al ser preguntado por un periodista si "Los Beatles eran más famosos que Jesucristo" a lo que este último respondió, que "sí, que lo eran", degeneró en una quema masiva en hogueras dentro de fanáticos religiosos y fundamentalistas que convenientemente olvidaron el amor hacia las increíbles composiciones hechas por estos chicos en detrimento de un fanatismo extremo e irracional por un simple frase.
And the fact is that, bands of the stature of: The Arctic Monkeys, Pearl Jam, Black Sabbath, Aerosmith, Nirvana, Deep Purple, The Ramones, Misfits, Depeche Mode, among many more have confessed the tremendous influence that the compositions made by all the members of The Beatles, have had within their musical careers. To the point that, for example, Dave Grohl has always expressed that he is inspired by the music of the boys from Liverpool in order to harmonise the choruses and arrangements in his songs. Obviously, Foo Fighters are also among the countless artists who have in one way or another covered songs originally attributed to the Fab Four. In other words, the influence that exists in all aspects of artistic creations is undeniable and unfading.
Personally, the song I liked the most, done by The Beatles, is "For No One". The song is from the 1966 album "Revolver" by this band. And it is performed entirely by Paul McCartney on vocals and bass, followed by John Lennon on rhythm guitar, George Harrison on lead guitar and Ringo on light drums within this song, well, this song generates in me, a nostalgic feeling about what I could never have and would like to keep. Between questions related to love, romance but also existentialism where many of us tend to question things that mostly keep evasive or impossible answers.
I can't be entirely objective with this subject, with the love and gratitude I feel towards a band that has changed me for life in a way that I simply can't do justice to with words. As I write these lines, a song comes to mind about the beautiful things that the former Soviet Union had, and yes, I'm talking about "Back to the USSR", a song that went unnoticed by most of the Beatles' repertoire, but thanks to the commercial success of "Yesterday", another of the many films that had a great deal of success in their repertoire, another of the many films that have a plot, script, soundtrack and motif in the work made by the boys from Liverpool, has brought for this theme that simply highlights the beauty of the Muscovite, Georgian and Ukrainian girls. Quite a theme now, given how things have spiralled out of control in those Eastern European nations.
Y es que, bandas de la talla de: The Arctic Monkeys, Pearl Jam, Black Sabbath, Aerosmith, Nirvana, Deep Purple, The Ramones, Misfits, Depeche Mode, entre muchísimas más han confesado la tremenda influencia que las composiciones hechas por todos los integrantes de The Beatles, han tenido dentro de sus carreras musicales. Al punto, que por ejemplo Dave Grohl, siempre ha expresado que se inspira en la música de los chicos de Liverpool para poder armonizar los coros, y arreglos dentro de sus canciones. Obviamente, Foo Fighters, también entra dentro de los innumerables artistas que han hecho de una u otra manera covers de canciones originalmente atribuidas a los Fab Four. Dicho de otro modo, la influencia que existe en todos los aspectos de las creaciones artísticas es innegable e inmarcesible.
Personalmente, la canción que más me ha gustado, hecha por Los Beatles, es "For No One". La canción está dentro del disco de 1966 "Revolver" de esta banda. Y es interpretada enteramente por Paul McCartney en la voz y en el bajo, seguido por John Lennon en la guitarra rítmica, George Harrison en la guitarra principal y Ringo en la leve batería dentro de este tema, pues, esta canción genera en mí, un sentimiento nostálgico sobre lo que nunca pude tener y me gustaría conservar. Entre cuestiones relacionadas con el amor, el romance pero también el existencialismo donde muchos solemos llegar al cuestionar cosas que mayoritariamente guardan respuestas evasivas o imposibles.
No puedo ser enteramente objetivo con este tema, con el amor y la gratitud que siento hacia una banda que me ha cambiado para toda la vida de un modo que sencillamente no puedo hacer justicia con palabras. Es que mientras escribo estás líneas, se me viene a la mente, una canción sobre las cosas linda que tenía la extinta Unión Soviética, y sí, hablo de "Back to the USSR" un tema que mayoritariamente pasó desapercibido para la gran mayoría dentro del repertorio de Los Beatles pero que gracias al éxito comercial de "Yesterday", otra de las tantas películas que tienen un argumento, guión, soundtrack y motivo en la obra hecha por los chicos de Liverpool, ha traído para este tema que sencillamente destaca lo lindo de las chicas moscovitas, georgianas y ucranianas. Todo un tema ahora, visto cómo las cosas se han salido de control en aquellas naciones del este de Europa.
Finally, I only ask those of you who read me, to contribute with your comments, experiences and sensations to know how fascinating this revolutionary, immortal and incredible band of our modern history has been. Let's remember that they have not been together as a band since 1969, but that each one of them was never as good, as monumental or as influential as when they were all part of the same musical, artistic and transcendental "being". Someday all those who were once the golden boys of England will die, but never, never will the magnificent musical, rhythmic, compositional, visual and harmonic work they bequeathed to the whole of humanity perish.
