I had never heard of this song before, but as I was packing up from one of my "Senior Retirement" performances, a man approached me and asked for this song (I had trouble making out just what he was saying, but I finally did)
So I searched and searched, and I found several recordings from Streisand and Sinatra and others, that ALWAYS omitted the verse, instead just had the chorus, instrumental break, chorus.
That did not particularly impress me, until I stumbled across this video clip from
Downton Abbey
Watching it, my throat closed up with the tenderness and circumstances, so I just HAD to search for more of the lyrics.
I found an audio recording (Buck Henry?) from around 1900 on a scratchy 78 RPM recording, and I got these lyrics, the best I could do.
Then I listened by ear to learn the song.
So here I am in my livingroom, giving you
"If you were the only girl in the world, and I were the only boy"
I told Barbara about this last week.
This is my first post here on the Music Community, I hope I have dotted all the i's and crossed all the Tee's
