Hello music lovers, this is my first time posting in this community, but I thought I'd share a story about my first music video I shot with the help of a friend from collage.
One weekend I decided to rent some equipment from collage so I could shoot something, I had no idea in mind, just took it out and thought I'd figure something out when I get back.
Luckily a friend from my class who lived in my town decided to help me not only get the equipment to the bus, but also film something once we got back, as she wanted something to do and get some more experience using the equipment too.
So there we were with Panasonic in a heavy duty travel case, a tri-pod, 3 LED lights with stands and a H4N and boom pole, slowly making our way to the bus stop.
We had brainstormed a couple of ideas, we were thinking of filming some kind of skit, but couldn't seem to come up with anything, we carried on thinking of different ideas, nothing really stood out though.
I got the stuff back to the house and the lads from my band were hanging out as we were suppose to have a bit of a jam this night since it was Friday. They were pretty surprised when they saw us walk in with all the equipment, as we sat down and told them about some of the ideas we'd brainstormed one of the replys were.
"how about do a video for This Is The Time?"
[This Is The Time - Dangerous Dave and the Side Effects]
The video itself was done simple, just a performance piece which we took from a lot of different angles and also done multi-cam, using a go pro and the panasonic. Go pro's are great little camera's and have come in useful for me so many times while shooting music videos, looking down the neck of guitars or basses, or getting an above wide shot from on top of a shelf can look great and give you the coverage you need. Especially before I owned a wide lens for my dslr, I still get use of the go pro now, but back when I started it was a life saver. It's all about creativly utilising what you have, I was never happy about the go pro's auto focus, at the end of the day though it's better to get something shot and get the experience, rather than wait until you have the equipment you want.
I think for the first one filmed it turned out pretty well, if I was to do it again now there are some silly little mistakes made with it that I wouldn't make now, but all and all it's good and the style of the edit matches the song.
Mistakes have to be made it really is the only way to learn especially when it comes to film production, there's nothing worse than sitting down at a computer and reviewing the footage and saying damn. I didn't get this, or this shot isn't good, usually if you're fast enough you can get back out for a reshoot, but, sometimes you can't and have to make do with what you have. Either way it'll be another thing you'll think about while making your next video.
This Is The Time is one of the songs off our first album released back in 2016 and the music video as we finished it was able to accompany it and help get a bit of a stir going, it would lead on to a few more music videos once we all had a better idea of what was possible and how to film it.
