To say that someone is the best in their style is something difficult and risky, due to the variety and competitiveness of today's globalised world; however, it would be fair to make an exhaustive review of why a singer or a group of them, comes to hold such a qualification. When the name "Guaco" is heard in my country, people immediately know that it is not a simple musical group, but a group of artists who have led this company to become what it is, Guaco is synonymous with excellence and to speak of them is to speak of the best in their style.

Decir que alguien es el mejor en su estilo, resulta algo difícil y arriesgado, por lo variado y competitivo que resulta el mundo globalizado de hoy en día; sin embargo, sería justo hacer una revisión exhaustiva del por qué un cantante o un grupo de ellos, llega a ostentar semejante calificativo. Cuando en mi país se escucha el nombre de “Guaco”, la gente inmediatamente sabe que no se trata de una simple agrupación musical, sino de un aglomerado de artistas que han llevado a esta empresa, a convertirse en lo que es, Guaco es sinónimo de excelencia y hablar de ellos, es hablar de los mejores en su estilo.

A team of high musical quality, who have managed to amalgamate sounds, mixing the old with the new, always taking care to maintain their instrumental base, but without fear of trying out new melodies; that's why mentioning this group is as simple as playing one of their songs and people instantly identifying them. Join me in this exciting and difficult task, to make a brief review of their history and what it means to talk about Guaco inside or outside the country. The Super Band of Venezuela.
Y precisamente cuando nos referimos a un estilo, estamos ante los pioneros en lo referente a creatividad, originalidad y vanguardia. Un equipo de alta calidad musical, que ha logrado amalgamar sonidos, mezclar lo viejo con lo novedoso, cuidando siempre en mantener su base instrumental, pero sin temor al ensayo con nuevas melodías; por eso, mencionar a esta agrupación es tan sencillo como, sonar una de sus canciones y que la gente los identifique al instante. Acompáñenme en esta apasionante y difícil tarea, para hacer una breve revisión de su historia y de lo que representa hablar de Guaco dentro o fuera del país. La Súper Banda de Venezuela.
The fact of mentioning more than 40 studio albums and an endless list of hits that range from the gaita, their salsa beginnings, pop and even a merengue, indicates the titanic task of talking about this historic group, which has travelled to every corner of the country and has toured a large part of the biggest stages on the planet. Referring to the presence of a bird native to the region, a group of boys founded a group called Los Guacos del Zulia in the 1960s, as they are originally from the famous city of Maracaibo in the western state of Zulia. Like all new projects, these boys never imagined the promising future to come.
El hecho de mencionar más de 40 discos de estudio y una lista interminable de éxitos que se pasean por la gaita, sus inicios salseros, pop e incluso un merengue, nos indica la tarea titánica de hablar de esta agrupación histórica, que se ha paseado por cada rincón del país y ha recorrido gran parte de los mayores escenarios del planeta. Haciendo referencia a la presencia de un ave autóctona de la región, un grupo de muchachos fundan en los años 60, una agrupación llamada Los Guacos del Zulia, dado que son originarios de la famosa ciudad de Maracaibo en el Estado Zulia, al oeste del país. Como todo nuevo proyecto, estos chicos jamás imaginaron el futuro promisorio por venir.
Nevertheless, Los Guacos had the secret formula: "Work and Constancy", these constants together with the discipline and the tireless desire to innovate and surpass themselves; all these factors had a strong influence on the beginnings of the then new group. Los Guacos soon made their sound stand out among the traditional gaitero groups in the city of the beloved sun. So they began to follow their salsa influences and added the salsa flavour without forgetting their origins, spending their first decade as a time to establish themselves and by the beginning of the 80s, their hits were already beginning to be heard all over the country, the group's stardom began.
No obstante, los Guacos tenían la fórmula secreta: “Trabajo y Constancia”, estas constantes se unen a la disciplina y las ganas incansables de innovar y superarse a sí mismos; todos estos factores influyeron marcadamente en los inicios, de la entonces novel agrupación. Los Guacos pronto hicieron notar su sonido diferente entre los grupos gaiteros tradicionales, en la ciudad del sol amada. Así que comenzaron a seguir sus influencias salseras y agregaban el sabor salsero sin olvidar su origen, pasando su primera década como un tiempo para establecerse y ya a inicio de los años 80, sus éxitos ya comenzaban a sonar por todo el territorio nacional, comenzaba el estrellato de la agrupación.
Undoubtedly, one of the characteristics of a great musical group, whatever their musical style, is the quality of their live performances; that is a kind of gauge of the level of a singer or a group of music artists, since it is the perfect platform and the perfect moment to show what they are made of. And people who go to concerts know how to identify when a singer is doing well or badly. This is one of the strong points that make Guaco the excellent team that it is, because its members have always been great exponents of an excellent vocal register, Don Gustavo Aguado is proof of this.
Sin duda, uno de las características de un gran grupo musical, sea cual sea su estilo musical, es la calidad de sus presentaciones en vivo; eso es una especie de medidor del nivel que tiene un cantante o un grupo de artistas de la música, dado que es la tribuna y el momento perfecto para demostrar de qué están hechos. Y la gente que va a los conciertos, sabe identificar cuando un cantante lo está haciendo bien o mal. Este es uno de los puntos fuertes que hacen de Guaco, el excelente equipo que es, porque sus integrantes siempre han sido grandes exponentes de un excelente registro vocal, Don Gustavo Aguado es prueba fehaciente de ello.
Who doesn't remember the impeccable voice of Amílcar Boscán, interpreting great classics such as: Pastelero, Cepillao, El Billetero, Un cigarrito y un café. Not to mention the wonderful voice of Nelson Arrieta, in that classic "todo quedó quedó", Zapatero or Ya no eres Tú. Gustavo Aguado himself has great songs with his unique voice, songs like Las Caraqueñas, Detalle en Falso and Turbulencia, among many, many more. With this new dimension of talents, Guaco starts its internationalisation in a formal way and many artists declare their admiration for the quality of the group, such as Gilberto Santa Rosa and the great Juan Luis Guerra, among many others.

Ni hablar de la maravillosa voz de Nelson Arrieta, en aquel clásico “todo quedó quedó”, Zapatero o Ya no eres Tú. El propio Gustavo Aguado tiene grandes temas con su voz única, temas como Las Caraqueñas, Detalle en Falso y la Turbulencia, entre muchísimos más. Con esta nueva dimensión de talentos, Guaco inicia su internacionalización de manera formal y muchos artistas declaran su admiración por la calidad de la agrupación, tales como Gilberto Santa Rosa y el gran Juan Luis Guerra, entre muchos otros.
In the mid 90's, the fresh blood of cousins Luis Fernando and Ronald Borjas, joined Guaco and became the guarantors of the continuity of success in the first decade after the new millennium; these guys performed great songs that are a must at every party and in every presentation, the songs "Eres Más", "Pídeme" and "Lo Eres Todo". It is common to see Guaco at the closing of big musical events, that is to say, as the star group and the one that brings together other artists to give the night and Christmas parties in Venezuela. It is not unreasonable to say that every Venezuelan is proud of Guaco's achievements and their evolutionary journey over the years.
A mediados de los años 90, la sangre fresca de los primos Luis Fernando y Ronald Borjas, ingresan a Guaco y se convertirían en los garantes de la continuidad de éxito en la primera década posterior al nuevo milenio; estos muchachos interpretaron grandes temas que son infaltables en cada fiesta y en cada presentación, las canciones “Eres Más”, “Pídeme” y “Lo Eres Todo”. Es común ver a Guaco en los cierres de los grandes eventos musicales, es decir, como el grupo estelar y el que reúne a otros artistas para dar las fiestas nocturnas y navideñas en Venezuela. No resulta descabellado afirmar que todo Venezolano se siente orgulloso de los logros de Guaco y de su recorrido evolutivo con el transcurrir de los años.
The Super Band has never been static or boasted about their successes; and that has been key to their continued growth. They always look to the future, never stop designing, inventing or creating sounds; they always manage to move to the rhythm of the changing world. After the millennium, their albums Equus, Guajiro, Escultura, Presente Continuo and Bidimensional are proof of this. Unforgettable is that pair of Latin Grammys, in the mention of Best Tropical Album, obtained with these last two albums (2016 and 2017); a fact that made Venezuelans proud once again. So far, their latest album is "Sin Peligro de Extinción" from 2018, whose concert tour was affected by the pandemic.
La Súper Banda nunca se ha quedado estática o se ha vanagloriado de sus éxitos; y eso ha sido clave en su crecimiento continuo. Siempre miran hacia el futuro, no paran de diseñar, inventar ni de crear sonidos; siempre se las arreglan para moverse al ritmo del mundo cambiante. Luego del mileno sus discos Equus, Guajiro, Escultura, Presente Continuo y Bidimensional, son muestra de ello. Inolvidable ese par de Grammys Latinos, en la mención de Mejor Álbum Tropical, obtenidos con estos dos últimos discos (años 2016 y 2017); hecho que enorgulleció una vez más a los Venezolanos. Hasta ahora su última producción discográfica, es “Sin Peligro de Extinción” del año 2018, cuya gira de conciertos se vio afectada por la pandemia.
Today, the Súper Banda has new faces in its ranks, but the experience gives them the strength to continue on the road to musical success. After a long road travelled and 59 years after their first album, Don Gustavo Aguado is still the heart of the team and everywhere you look Guaco is Guaco. This is my tribute to this excellent Venezuelan group.

Actualmente, la Súper Banda tiene nuevos rostros en sus filas, pero la experiencia les da la fortaleza para continuar en el camino del éxito musical. Después de un largo camino recorrido y a 57 años de su primer disco, sigue Don Gustavo Aguado como el corazón del equipo y por donde se le mire Guaco es Guaco.
