En la vida de Bach hay varios episodios célebres que dan cuenta su carácter, a continuación una correspondencia que deja ver un Bach capaz de decir las cosas sin rodeos y de forma contundente cuando sentía que de alguna manera alguien sobrepasaba los límites:

«Señor Martius: Mi paciencia ha llegado a su límite. ¿Cuánto tiempo cree usted que debo seguir esperando el clavecín? Han pasado ya dos meses y seguimos igual. Lamento escribirle en estos términos pero no me ha quedado otro remedio. Debe devolver las cosas correctamente de aquí a cinco días, de lo contrario dejaremos de ser amigos. Adiós. Joh. Sebast. Bach.” (Leipzig, 20 de marzo de 1748).

«Mr. Martius: My patience has reached its limit. How long do you think I should keep waiting for the harpsichord? Two months have passed and we are still the same. I am sorry to write to you in these terms but I have no other choice. He must return things correctly in five days, otherwise we will stop being friends. Goodbye. Joh. Sebast. Bach. " (Leipzig, March 20, 1748).
