this one could be called,"a tale of two herbies"
of course, I'm talking about herbie hancock and herbie mann...i would consider myself a pretty big fan of both these artists, probably having more than five records each of these musicians-although i would not say die hard in any way. that being said, rockit and chameleon are classics and pretty hugely influential songs to this day.
but all of herbie material is not gold...hes put out more than 40 studio albums!...over how ever many decades. but, you can definitely see him conveniently evolving to fit in with the trends of the times. he had his funk era, disco and even 80s hip hop and techno world music. oh dont forget the "return to the classic standards" era that every jazz musician inevitably returns to.
but here is a disco number from Herbie Hancock that barely even has any keys! it's not bad some late era disco funk with vocoder and female vocals from 1979.
hancock would definitely be considered a legend where....maybe its easy to forget or pass over herbie mann. i can't think of many flute led groups that get top billing, but im no flutateer expert (sorry, a really old inside joke)
all that being said, herbie mann has some really cool songs/covers...they never really get that smooth and stay pretty funky...this version of "hijack" is a really good standout disco era track. i think it was sampled by Jurassic 5? ive never heard his 80s or later era, assuming that that exists...but im kind of a sucker for any funky rendition of old pop songs.
the only question remaining is, which one of these guys will be the first to put out a dubstep album??
update: herbie mann put out 80 or 90 albums in his life, wow!
