Today I was out in the crusty dollar bin of one of my local record stores, getting my fingers all filthy and doing what I do best, to find the lost gems to share with you some of the highlights of my finds... Enjoy!
Originally Concept
"Can You Feel It?"
1985
OH dang, here's a classic Breakbeat mix from one of the first Def Jam releases. Original Concept was Doctor Dre's group-you know, the MTV host from Yo MTV Raps?? These jams are so good. Unfortunately, Original Concept never really got their due because Rick Rubin was too busy pimping RUN DMC and the beastie boys. They only put out a few singles and eventually, one full length record.
Everess
"Don't You Take Your Love"
1985
Here is some 80s freestyle on the Acebeat label. The writer of the song was Paul Scott, who would later go on to be in N-SYNC! You know, the deep house group from the mid 90s??? I definitely dig the production on this one, though.
Norma
"Life Is the Reason"
1983
Next, I'm hitting you with some of that high NRG 80s disco you know I am a fan of, care of Norma Lewis. She has a pretty long list of singles under her belt with various artists, even going well into the 21st century.
The Rae's
"A Little Lovin' (Keeps The Doctor Away)"
1978
Who better to ask for medical advice than a disco group? Surely, you can't cure everything by DANCE DANCE DANCING .. Can you?
Just for fun I'll leave you with the b side of the everess record, a cool funky 80s instrumental- that's probably even better than the vocal cut, but I wanted to give that singer her dues, since it was her only release, her career long forgotten... When I go in used record stores, I think of all the lost hopes and forgotten dreams, but really music is a time capsule just waiting to be discovered and shared with generations to come!
Thanks for reading, I hope you liked my post!
