Ah, Glasto. That's Glastonbury - which is pronounced 'Glaston-brie' not 'Glaston-berry' for you American heathens, hehe.
My sister in law was texting us from the UK saying what she could hear coming over the hills from her place. Quite a few of my friends were there but they are old enough to afford glamping now - that's a thousand quid each, nothing I could afford. As my hubs said, in the old days he'd be lucky to sleep under his jacket. He has some good stories from those days including sneaking people in to the festival in his truck and being part of the lot that pulled down the fence to get in one year. The best we could do though is watch videos on Youtube. I'm not so much a fan of the big names like Paul McCartney as I've heard it before - sooo many times - but I'm interested in some of the newer stuff and stuff I may not have seen on stage before like Billy Eilish. Anyway it made for a good Saturday night for us here in Australia dj'ing some songs on Youtube. Here's three I enjoyed this year.
Chez Longue Wet Leg
Hailing from Isle of Wight, these guys had a quite Melbourne sound as Melbs is pretty awesome at the post punk garage sound. I love how they came up with their name by mucking around with emoji - 💦 and 🦵. I did have a listen to a few of their other songs but they verged a bit more indie rock for my liking. Still cute though.
Dry Cleaning Scratchcard Lanyard
I loved a youtube comment on this one: 'this song hit all the right buttons in my brain. Then I watched the video, and realized I had more buttons'. I didn't care for the video as much as the live performance. I really like post punk as a genre so this really hit my buttons anyway. I liked the spoken word over the rolling bass.
Sleaford Mods Mork and Mindy
This isn't a new one for me as it's long been on my favourites list ever since I heard it. I love Billy No Mates too and I think I listed her song 'NO' in one of my music fave posts before, not for #ttt though! Bloody great tune this one. They played in Melbs pre Covid, wish I'd gone and seen them.
This is the kind of occasion where I wish I could share a ton more tunes like Fourtet and Orbital which closed off our personal Glastonbury night. These days I can't imagine I'd hack all the excitement of such a festival but watching the live performances certainly made me wish I had a spare thousand quid and lived back in Somerset!
It's certainly an iconic event and I'm so stoked for everyone who had a blast, and for those that didn't because they caned it so much they ended up in hospital, I hope at least they're safe and well. And kudos to the work crew who clean up the mess later so it can return to a working farm like it is for the rest of the year, when the mere echo of music sounds across the green hills of this beautiful land. Even better that it comes after the COVID fuckery, right? People having a good time and dancing really makes my heart swell with happy. Honestly, it might be coz I've got a hideous cold and have no emotional resilience, but reading about Glastonbury this morning made me cry.
You know what? I'm going to chuck a fourth one in here as I think it needs to be said. It's not that I even like the song, but the sentiment is fantastic and the crowd singing FUCK YOU with Olivia Rodrigo and Lily Allen against the overturning of Roe Vs Wade and naming the justice committee who had a hand in this decision. I didn't want to write a post about this decision as it's all been said already, but - fuck you very very very much. How it's possible that this can happen in 2022 beggars belief.
Finishing this post off with a very calm and measured response from the NZ PM Jacinda Ardern. Let's hope we all don't slide back to the 1950's.
With Love,
